The Montagues are a band that comes from the North Wales coast. They are a four-piece band that are: Kyle (vocalist, lead guitarist), Johnny (bass guitarist, vocals), Jack Wells (drummer) and newcomer Jack Mayall (guitarist).
This band is a type of rock band, but not heavy rock, but has the essence of fellow welsh bands Stereophonics and Catfish and the Bottlemen.
I have followed the guys’ music for a long time now, and have met up with them a few times after their gigs. They are such down to earth guys, and they each appreciate their fans and followers to gigs.
The back end of last year to the beginning of this year, things were going absolutely brilliant for the guys. Their gigs were crazy, but fantastic nights out.
Unfortunately, due the Covid19 outbreak, the guys have had to postpone a lot of their gigs for the time being.
They do have an amazing EP out called Calibrate, and I managed to get my signed copy last year. This album absolutely smashes it, with their original songwriting and upbeat tunes to rock too.
The album title song Calibrate can be interpreted as the story of most people’s lives, and really resonates with a lot of the fans, and it is most definitely a fan favourite. My favourite quote from the song really resonates with life at the moment “live for the moment, it’s all that you’ve got, tomorrow is coming, yesterday’s not”. I have actually designed a tattoo ready to be inked for when we are out of this pandemic with that quote attached to it. Yes, I am a mad fan for these lads. I try and support them at gigs whenever I can, and promote them as much as I can. Especially with radio play at Phase Radio Wales, yes I am forever asking for tracks by The Montagues. Haha. I play their tracks wherever and whenever, and that’s what counts to get people listening.
They are such a talent, and they really give it their all at the gigs, even joining in with the crowds (Kyle?), but these are the best live gigs I’ve been to in a long time, along with The Banshees.
Another favourite track of mine on the album is Devils. This is an epic track live, especially the guitar rifts in it. Gives me goosebumps and I whoop whoop when the guys start playing this! Again the wording for me is amazing and such talent.
Their latest single from the EP You Got it All (wrong), is absolutely mind-blowing. When I first heard this track, my interpretation was to do with mental health and dealing with the scars that are not shown physically. So I was excited and intrigued to see what the guys had in store for the video for this particular track. And WOW! It was like they read my mind, the video was shot so that when it was shot in a particular light, you could see the emotional scars on the inside, and that we all have our scars, and we should never be ashamed of them. Again this is an epic track off the EP.
Another two tracks on the EP are Side to Side, which is one to bounce around the house to on lockdown. Real rock track, and again amazing songwriting. Also not forgetting Nothing To Everything. What a track. This is another track that gives me goosebumps. It starts off with the opening line “ready to give up”, and then kicks off. And you can go from having Nothing ATO Everything, and that we do have to fight for it, but we can all get there. And how resonating is this track, and very fitting to the climate we are in at the moment. Some of us may be ready to give up, but we would have gone through the Nothing and got to the Everything, which would be to see our family and friends again.
