It’s movie review time folks and today I bring you my thoughts on The Owners starring Maisie Williams and one of my favourite Doctor Who actors Sylvester McCoy.
Many of you may have seen the the trailer for the movie that we posted up on the Blazing Minds YouTube channel recently, the trailer really doesn’t give much away about the film except that it has that very British feel to it and that there seemed to be some pretty brutal scenes in the production and believe me there are.

The Owners had me intrigued from the first time I saw the trailer, the idea of a fresh twist on the home-invasion genre had me wondering how the movie would play out and how the young vs older cast would come together in this adaptation of the graphic novel ‘Une Nuit de Pleine Lune’ from legendary creators Hermann and Yves H.

The movie opens up with a group of friends casing an isolated house in rural England which is owned by Richard Huggins (Sylvester McCoy) and his wife Ellen (Rita Tushingham – Doctor Zhivago, A Taste of Honey). Thinking they have the upper hand with the older couple they plan to what they think is an easy job of getting to the large safe that the Huggins have in their cellar.
After getting into the property they make their way to break into the safe, but the Huggins return home earlier than expected and the gang have to decide what they are going to do with them and get the combination from Dr Huggins (McCoy) to get what is in the massive safe.
But things take a turn for the worse as the tables are turned on the gang and the terrified couple change from trying to survive and to manipulate each of the gang members trying to turn them on each other before becoming psychotic in their attempt to stop the gang from getting into the safe and revealing what is in there.
I have to say that The Owners had me gripped right from the moment the house was broken into, Julius Berg has done a great job directing this movie, it feels very unnerving and brutal in parts that all work very well to bring the adaptation of the graphic novel to the screen.

The cast selection works perfectly for the material, Maisie Williams‘ character comes across well as she goes from someone on the defence to the attack, Jake Curran is perfect as Gaz with the character heading the gang to break into the safe and by any means of abuse to the Huggins and the gang members, Andre Ellis plays Terry well bringing across a loveable rogue feeling and a character that you feel for. Nathan (Ian Kenny) is a character that you know isn’t 100% what he is doing is right but he seems to be going along with the plan the best he can.

For me though in this rather unnerving movie I have to say that Sylvester McCoy and Rita Tushingham are the ones that really sold the movie for me, McCoy holds his own with the role of Dr Huggins as he changes his character from the victim to the aggressor with all the psychotic terror that is really unsettling, brilliant performed and very different from some of the other work that McCoy has done.

The same can be said for Tushingham as she puts on a great performance as Mrs Huggins, her portrayal of the character that seems to have Alzheimer symptoms that she shows with a change in character frequently is brilliant to watch, keep your eyes peeled for the kitchen scene when she shows us a side of the characters that certainly made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!
The Owners is a refreshing change from some of the other home invasion movies and if you want a story with a wonderful twist that you may not see coming then this is certainly a movie to check out.
