I recently had the fantastic opportunity to view the trilogy of Sabata. As a fan of country westerns and spaghetti westerns since I was a child, I was really looking forward to seeing these movies and others.
Sabata – Who is he and where does he come from?? No one knows, well except for one person it seems in this fantastic spaghetti western.
When thieves steal a safe from the town’s bank, Sabata (Lee Van Cleef, For a few Dollars more, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly) tracks them down and “persuades” them to give it to him so he can return it.
After he returns in and asks for a reward is when the action really starts and the twists begin.
This really is a fast-paced, all-action movie that I have come expect from most westerns. Lee Van Cleef never failed to deliver suspenseful acting and really keeps us on the edge of our seats in all the movies I have seen him in, although he is best known for acting in Spaghetti westerns, I first saw him in “Escape from new york”.
This is the first time I have seen these trilogies and I wished I had seen them years ago because these movies brought back all the reasons why I love country westerns and spaghetti westerns.
Sabata is definitely for all fans of westerns. It’s got it all great looking ladies, suspense, plot twist, great acting and of course, it wouldn’t be a western without the great gunfights.
Adios Sabata – Yul Brynner (Westworld, The magnificent seven) takes the reins as Sabata in this sequel. He has some big boots to fill following on from Van Cleef, and somehow something is missing in this sequel. After seeing him star in the magnificent seven and Westworld I was quite looking forward to seeing this sequel.
But the movie just doesn’t have the same panache as the original and for me, as a viewer, I have a hard time not seeing Brynner as the robot gunman.
Some of the action scenes in this one was quite confusing also and the villain in this one was not convincing either, felt more like a cartoon character.
However, putting all that aside another great western and worth a viewing.
Return of Sabata – Sabata returns for one final outing and also we see the return of Lee Van Cleef as the famous freewheeling gunslinger. This time round however Sabata becomes the victim when he loses $5000 to a shifty band of desperadoes and he wants revenge. And in the style of Van Cleef that does not fail to impress, gets me shouting at the screen and so good to have him back as the character too.
There was something about Lee Van Cleef that just by being on the screen with his hat on, gun holstered by his side just made it exciting without even saying a word or firing a shot.
I cant wait to see more of his movies that I have not yet seen.
This third and final chapter is as good as the first two, but a lot better than the second. I guess it is Van Cleef’s larger than life charisma that really brings the character to life.
All three movies are great fun to watch and really enjoy. They really brought back my love and fond memories of westerns. Any fan of spaghetti westerns will really enjoy these movies.
Directed by Gianfranco Parolini, who directed all 3 movies and a number of other spaghetti westerns, a fantastic director who does a brilliantly and never fails to deliver.
