Sometimes in our lives, things we’ve seen seem to be completed almost like magic, as if someone has done it behind our backs while we weren’t looking. Perhaps it was The Super Elfkins that did it for us? 

This animated film is almost a sequel to the classic fairy tale “The Elves and the Shoemaker” and features a group of small pointy-hatted people, in colourful clothes, whose aim in life is to help people. Yet at the same time, there is a separate group of 4 other Elfkins dressed in darker clothes, whose sole mission seems to be breaking into places and causing nothing but mischief. 

There’s also a police officer who believes the Elfkins are real and is trying to get evidence that they do exist. It’s a wild mix of happy, confused and downright naughty people. 

The animation on this is simple, yet effective. It’s not a wildly detailed world, but it works within the confines of the story they are trying to tell. The Elfkins look more real than the people, and that has kind of a strange uncanny valley effect on everything, but given that they are the focus of the story, it makes sense that they would seem more real. 

This is a sweet film that tells a story about lost and found family, framed around a legend within the Elfkins’ own history. It also tells a tale about being different, using the two groups of Elfkins as well as Humans V Elfkins. This all has nice moral aspects to it as well, with simple lessons to learn. 

Overall, this is a superb film aimed squarely at a young audience with a fairly unique distinction. There doesn’t seem to be much aimed at adults at all, jokes, etc., that might fly over children’s heads, and this is unusual for a modern animated film. The important thing about this, though, is that it’s a film that kids can sit down and enjoy all by themselves. 

I’m happy to give it a 3/5, with a big recommendation to kids to sit down and enjoy the adventure of the Super Elfkins.
