Monster Minis – The Thinning Veil – Short Film Review

The Thinning Veil is a sleek and stylish short horror film, written and directed by MJ Dixon, and produced by Anna Dixon and Ash Dixon. It stars Tatiana Ibba, Liza Keast, Martin Hosier, Robin Hosier, Lacey-Rose Hosier, and Liberty-Hope Hosier. A widow seeking to speak to her recently deceased husband has her cards read on Halloween when the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest.

This is another fantastic short from Mycho Entertainment. It’s tense, creepy, and disturbing as hell. The passing of loved ones is something we hold close to the vest and it’s long been a highly contentious subject throughout society. It’s a brilliant concept and a story that could easily find itself morphing into a feature at some point.

Short films are regularly dismissed and overlooked, however, they tend to really showcase a filmmakers’ talent and know-how. They cut right to the heart of the matter, leaving almost no room for error. In a sense, they’re more intimate and private, and therefore a whole lot scarier. And Mycho’s yearly Halloween shorts are what they do best.

There’s some truly extraordinary cinematography in this, with some fantastic music and phenomenal acting by Tatiana Ibba and Liza Keast. The editing is excellent and the special effects are absolutely incredible. Also, the lighting is some of the best I’ve seen in a long time.

Some of the camera angles could have been a little better though, and the story could use some tightening. But you’re so wrapped up in it all, you hardly even notice. It’s just such an awesome, entertaining picture.

The Thinning Veil is dark, twisted, and atmospheric. One of the best short films of all time. A new terrifying Halloween tradition. A spooktacular fright fest. Definitely check this one out if you get the chance, it’ll scare you out of your skin.
