It was back to Cineworld in Broughton the other day to check out the latest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the fourth movie in the Thor movies, Thor Love and Thunder in IMAX.
After his retirement is interrupted by Gorr the God Butcher, a galactic killer who seeks the extinction of the gods, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg, and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who now inexplicably wields Mjolnir as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late., which is the fourth Thor movie in the ever-popular movie franchise.
Thor Love and Thunder in IMAX kicks off in a rather sombre tone with Gorr (Christain Bale) taking revenge on his God for not answering his prayers and those of his race which he is the last of, this really doesn’t set the pace for the film, but it does give you a feeling of despair and sadness, before taking us to what we know best with Taika Waititi’s previous Thor movie, that of comedy and action.
This is the fourth movie in the franchise and it still has all the comedy and great one-liners that we got used to with Ragnarok, but this time we get more of the emotional journey that Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is taking, especially with the introduction of lady Thor (Natalie Portman) as he tries to come to terms that his beloved hammer, Mjölnir, is now hers and he is really missing it, look out for the jealously from Stormbreaker.
Korg (Taika Waititi) starts us off with the story of Thor and his love Jane Fonda, sorry Foster while telling children about the God of Thunder and it also acts as a bit of a “story so far” section, which is in true Korg style is one that had me laughing.
The movie is certainly packed with some great action sequences and some stunning IMAX Expanded Aspect Ratio scenes as well, one that really stands out is when Thor, Jane, Korg and King Valkirye head to the Omnipotence City, the IMAX opens up to the vastness of the screen to make you feel like you are really in the city with its lush colours and extravagant walkways.
The good vs bad part of the film looks great, the cinematography goes with a subdued use of colour that on the IMAX screen works so well, with only some slight touches of colours bleeding through, I think this was one of the moments that I loved watching.
Thor Love and Thunder certainly is not the best in the Thor MCU movies but with the amount of comedy and action that comes thick and fast, its one that is fun to watch with its 1h 59m runtime, there are many moments that you will think “what the heck”, such as the screaming goats (now there’s a sound you can’t get out of your head once you’ve heard it).
It’s great to see all the cast of Thor movies back together and to have The Guardians of the Galaxy as well, it’s going to be interesting to see how their next outing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe plays off, the story to Love and Thunder is a simple one and you can take the movie as an action-comedy movie that is a great bit of fun.
It’s not going to be for every Marvel fan and it’s certainly a far move away from the very first Thor movie, but I love the direction of Waititi and always enjoyed his movies, so for me, Thor Love and Thunder is a fun rollercoaster ride with plenty of comedy that had many of the people during my screening laughing out loud as much as I did.
Thor Love and Thunder the IMAX Experience
As part of the Filmed for IMAX programme, Thor Love and Thunder was shot with IMAX-certified digital cameras and features nearly 35 minutes of IMAX exclusive Expanded Aspect Ratio (EAR). Marvel fans will find themselves totally immersed in IMAX’s 1.90:1 aspect ratio, providing 26% more picture, demonstrating how director Taika Waititi embraced IMAX technology to provide moviegoers with a unique experience.
The IMAX scenes do look fantastic with the picture quality crisp and clear, opening up the screen to the 1.90:1 ratio is seamlessly done and for me, the moments that were chosen to be shot in IMAX (EAR) are perfectly chosen. The sound is also stunning with the IMAX mix bringing us precision sound, as well as deep bass for the explosions and the soundtrack, which I have to say, is awesome, I’ve never heard Guns n Roses sound so good.
If you are a fan of the MCU then watching Thor: Love and Thunder in IMAX is a great option to take and for me, I would have to say it was the best option for sound and image, the movie won’t please everyone but hey what movies do these days.
