In some movie release news today, we bring you the trailer for the upcoming release DARUMA. Directed by Alexander Yellen (X Nation) and written by Kelli McNeil-Yellen, Daruma is a powerful story of connection, responsibility and redemption, with dark humour and heart.
The film features formidable performances from its two leads: disabled actors Tobias Forrest (Law & Order: Organised Crime) and John W. Lawson (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines) in authentic roles, and following its award-winning festival run and American premiere, Daruma is set to make its UK digital debut on 1 September from Miracle Media.
There are also powerful performances from the stellar supporting cast, including Golden Globe® winner Barry Bostwick (The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Megaforce), Abigail Hawk (Blue Bloods) and Austin Basis (The Marvellous Mrs Maisel, Beauty and the Beast).
Patrick (Forrest), a paraplegic Iraq veteran, is forced to confront his past when he’s unexpectedly tasked with the guardianship of his young daughter Camilla (Victoria Scott), whom he’s only just discovered exists.
Initially, Patrick rejects all responsibility, but on hearing that the care costs will be covered, he tries to scrub up his act and welcomes Camilla into his life. However, it’s not long before he is overwhelmed by newfound fatherhood and the responsibility it brings and enlists the help of grouchy neighbour Robert (Lawson), a double amputee and fellow veteran, to help transport Camilla to the other side of the country, to reunite her with her maternal grandparents.
What sets out as a means to an end becomes a challenging yet life-changing road trip with these unlikely companions, in a journey of self-discovery that will melt even the coldest of hearts.
Honest, moving and long overdue, Daruma highlights authentic representation in action, normalising disabilities rather than reinforcing the often seen ‘overcoming adversity’ trope.
