Today the hotel search website trivago.co.uk revealed the results of their inaugural Top Hotel Awards, using aggregated online user ratings to recognise the best rated hotels, both regionally and nationally. The Clontarf Hotel in Llandudno is the top-rated hotel in Wales, followed by Tan Dinas Country House and Oakfield House, both in Betws-y-Coed.
Trivago gathers over 190 million ratings from over 30 websites worldwide, they’ve crafted a comprehensive, fair and reliable index of hotel ratings: the trivago Rating Index (tRI). They use an algorithm to aggregate the ratings, which provides a dependable and impartial score, whether a hotel has 400 reviews or 4,000. Trivago say that it’s based on a tried-and-true mathematical approach, their index is unbiased, clear and transparent. With daily updates, it is perhaps the most up-to-date rating index for hotels available. For the trivago Top Hotel Awards, hotels with availability and at least 400 reviews were considered.
With a rating of 96.21, The Clontarf Hotel in Llandudno is the best-rated hotel in Wales and the 4th best in the of the UK. In second place (and 41st in the UK) is Tan Dinas Country House in Betws-y-Coed, with a rating of 94.99. Third place goes to Oakfield House, also in Betws-y-Coed, with a rating of 94.09.

While The Clontarf is an independent hotel on Llandudno’s West Coast, both Tan Dinas Country House and Oakfield house are B&Bs located in Snowdonia National Park. The top three are a good representation of the mix of accommodation in the best-rated of the region, comprising a total of 12 hotels and eight B&Bs.
There are a range of average room rates in the top-rated hotels in Wales, from £59 to £198 per night. The cheapest is Karden House in Llandudno (ranked 9th) at £59 per night, followed by Pier Hotel in Rhyl (ranked 7th) at £61 per night. The most expensive is St Brides Spa Hotel (ranked 20th) in Saundersfoot, at £198, followed by The Hotel Portmeirion (ranked 14th), at £191 per night. These rates are the average of all available room options, including suites.

The majority of hotels in the top 10 are in North Wales, with only Swansea’s The Mirador in the south. Llandudno boasts a total of three hotels in the top 10 (including the top-rated hotel), while Betws-y-Coed should be commended for claiming hotels rated 2nd and 3rd. Two hotels in Caernarfon also made the top 10.
