Thanks to Cineworld bringing back the movie to the big screen, I finally got the chance to see Twisters in 4DX and it was a rollercoaster with me feeling the full force of the tornados as I was thrown around my seat and soaked with water and dried off with the wind effects!
“Twisters” brings back the epic studio disaster movie genre with an adrenaline-pumping, seat-gripping, big-screen thrill ride that puts you in direct contact with one of nature’s most wondrous—and destructive—forces. Produced by the team behind the Jurassic, Bourne, and Indiana Jones series, “Twisters” is a current-day continuation of the 1996 blockbuster “Twister.”
Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, the Oscar-nominated writer-director of Minari, Twisters stars Golden Globe nominee Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing, Normal People) and Glen Powell (Anyone But You, Top Gun: Maverick) as opposing forces who come together to try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes.
Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Carter, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years. She now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous, the better.
As storm season intensifies, unprecedented and terrifying phenomena are unleashed, placing Kate, Tyler, and their rival teams directly in the paths of multiple converging storm systems over central Oklahoma as they fight for their lives.
I loved Twister back in 1996 and this stand-alone sequel was something that I was looking forward to but wasn’t overly sure if it would give me the same feelings that the original movie did. There are several similarities between this movie and the 1996 movie and that’s not just the Tornados. We have a group of Tornado chasers again. Powel and Edgar-Jones come across as very similar to the characters played by Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt in 1996, so you will feel like you are watching a remake/reboot rather than a sequel.
Although I didn’t enjoy Twisters as much as I did with Twister, the action sequences during the chasing of the Tornados and the Tornado scenes look impressive with the modern technology used to make the effects. But for me what made the film more exciting was the addition of the 4DX. Throughout the film, you feel like you are smack bang in the middle of the action, from being thrown around in your seat to being soaked with the rain effects to give a full-on immersive experience.
The cast for Twisters is good and I did find myself getting pulled into the growing relationship between Powel and Edgar-Jones, I’m not sure if it’s because I enjoyed the 1996 movie so much that Twisters just seemed too familiar and there wasn’t that much new to pull me in more.
The sound, effects and 4DX made this film more entertaining for me and I might not have enjoyed it as much without the 4DX, but you never know.
