Wow is it really five years to the day that I last reviewed an Underworld movie? It certainly is, the last movie was Underworld: Awakening which I thoroughly enjoyed back in 2012, now Selene (Kate Beckinsale) is back in that very famous outfit!
For those that haven’t seen any of the franchise, the film starts with a recap of the story so far, as Selene gives us the run down of what has happened, Underworld: Blood Wars continues from the 2012 movie and we now find Selene on the run from not just the Lycan clan but also from the Vampire faction, as they both want to know where Eve, Selene’s daughter, is hiding.
Selene joins forces with David (Theo James) and Thomas (Charles Dance) to bring an end to the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires and this means that she could have to make the ultimate sacrifice!
Underworld Blood Wars – Legacy
I’ve loved all the Underworld movies, ever since the first one hit our cinema screens back in 2003, it is a shame that Scott Speedman didn’t reprise his role as Michael in the “blood memory” scenes, but then again I think most of us are used to him not being in the franchise since Underworld Evolution.
But not having the character doesn’t spoil the movie, let’s face it the character throughout the movies has always been Selene, except for the 3rd movie, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, a prequel to how the war started.
With this, being the 5th movie released a while after the previous movie, I wasn’t sure if this film was still going to be as enjoyable as the previous movies, but to be honest this latest film in the franchise is so much better than some of its predecessors. This film is way more about the final battle and we are also introduced to a new vampire faction, which explains the Ombre look to Selene’s hair in the posters.
Much like the other movies, there is plenty of action with some great fight sequences and stunt work, along with a storyline that runs smoothly and keeps you interested between the hacking and shooting of Lycans and Vampires through the film. We also get to learn more about the characters, such as finding out more about David, who we were introduced to in Underworld Awakening.
I have to say that Director, Anna Foerster, has done a brilliant job with her feature directorial debut, the film flows nicely along and it looks brilliant. Underworld Blood Wars is a worthy sequel in the franchise. According to IMDB, “It was originally thought that this was Kate Beckinsale’s last movie playing the character Selene, but Len Wiseman has confirmed a sixth movie is in development with Beckinsale reprising her character.“. So look out for more of Selene in the next few years.
