Venue Cymru to Undergo Major Development Costing £3 Million
We’ve had the news in that one of our favourite theatres is set for A MAJOR redevelopment of North Wales’s leading arts and events centre is now underway.
The project, costing around £3million, will increase the flexibility of the conference spaces at Venue Cymru, Llandudno, making the facility work better and be more attractive to organisations wishing to hold large national and even international events there.
Venue Cymru currently generates £33.5million in economic benefits to the region, per annum (Arad Research), supporting over 600 jobs in the area.
Funding for the project has come through the Tourism Attractor Destinations Programme, a Visit Wales led programme of key tourism developments across Wales funded through the European Regional Development Fund and supported by additional funding from Welsh Government and Conwy County Borough Council.
The redevelopment programme has been carefully planned to work around the existing conference and theatre bookings in order to minimise disruption to patrons.
***Creation of an 180sq metre conference / studio room, a multi-purpose space with sprung floor that can be used for performances and rehearsals as well as conference meetings. This will create one of 4 spaces that large conferences can break out into and will also be used to support the year round creative programme
***Demountable petition being installed in the Main Hall, allowing the 700sq metre space to be split in two, increasing flexibility to attract new conference business to the town
***Reconfiguration of the ground-floor Orme Suite – this will link up the conference atrium and the theatre foyer, allowing Venue Cymru to use the function room without patrons losing access through the building. The Orme Suite will also have improved bar and catering facilities
***Reconfiguration of back of house service spaces, along with the addition of a new service lift and stairwell
***New glazed front wall on the promenade front
Cllr Louise Emery, Conwy County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said: “It’s great to see the project actually starting. The new layout and additional meeting spaces will enable the centre to attract a wider variety of clients and more bookings is more business for the local economy.”
Sarah Ecob Venue Cymru’s General Manager, said: “We are delighted that we have been able to secure funding to enhance the building, which will help us to attract even more events to Llandudno in the future.”
Venue Cymru’s conference centre attracts major national associations ranging from leading Trade Unions, political parties, religious and faith groups and scientific organisations. The building is also very popular as a location for televised events including sports tournaments such as Ladbroke’s Players Championship Final snooker, BBC1’s ‘Question Time’ and Junior Eurovision for S4C.
The re-development project due for completion in summer, 2019 and the contractor is Adever Construction.
