When the email came through about Voodoo Apocalypse and that it was Cops, Kung FU, Masked Wrestlers & Zombies coming together in a tribute to 70s grindhouse I was intrigued as it sounded crazy and I do like crazy now and again.
After disappearing for five years, detective Charlie Vargas returns to Los Angeles to avenge the death of his former partner. Along with White Chocolate, a young detective with a chip on his shoulder, the two enter a world of Black Magic, Zombies and Mexican Wrestling, in search of the infamous drug trafficker and murderer, Jimmy Vanilla.
The movie kicks off with that made on film feel with the scratch effects that you would get on a 70s film, starting with a bar scene with subtitles before a shoot out with some really up-tempo music thrown in for effect, shortly after a slight misunderstanding we are treated with really funky music for the credits.
I have to say that I’ve been watching some crazy films recently, but with the lack of cinema it’s great to watch something different and Voodoo Apocalypse is certainly different, harkening back to those days of the 70s films that used to exploit almost everything, this movie certainly plays on the style of those films.
As I mentioned early it has the effects running through the film that make it look worn out, the sound feels like its dubbed over without a thought, but then that’s how some of the film like this were at the time and it works brilliantly for the feel and effect of the film.
Look out for a “taxi driver” scene in the toilets at the club, it’s one of those childish humour gags that had me laughing out very loudly, yes that’s down to my crazy sense of humour.
Voodoo Apocalypse is totally bonkers and it works, director Vasni Ramos has certainly brought a film to screens that gives you that WTF moment several times throughout the film, but hey we all have to have some fun from time to time and this is another one of those movies that are so crazy that it’s crazy fun.
The first part of the film is more of a build-up of the characters of Charlie Vargas (Jose Ramallo) and White Chocolate (Sergio G. Ramos) but all with the added craziness of the Grindhouse style violence, humour and some Lucha libre wrestlers with some slight gore thrown in for good measure and of course some great looking 70s stock footage for the greenscreen backgrounds when they are travelling in their car.
Hang on, didn’t someone mention ZOMBIES in Voodoo Apocalypse!
Well yes, I mentioned those at the top of this article, so while watching Voodoo Apocalypse I was wondering where they were myself, but they do make an appearance and when they do the zombie goo certainly hits the fan, but these zombies are the George A. Romero type you are used to, but they are still mindless hungry creatures that just want to feed, oh and their heads certainly go “pop” when they are shot.
With the chances of many of us going down into various forms of lockdown lately, it’s great that we have the option to check out films that maybe wouldn’t get a chance with the boys over in Hollywood and Voodoo Apocalypse is a film that if you have a sense of humour, love something that bit different and crazy, this is a movie you may want to check out.
I really enjoyed the escape from the serious movies we seem to get these days, so this is a refreshing change to have a damn good laugh with and considering this one only took five weeks to film it’s not all that bad.
Munro Films will be releasing their insane, action-packed thriller, Voodoo Apocalypse on Digital Download from 9th November and will be available across iTunes, Amazon, Google, Microsoft with more to be confirmed.
