Last night was another chance to preview a movie a little early, this time thanks to Cineworld we got the chance to check out the Unlimited Screening of Wicked Little Letters starring Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley.
When people in Littlehampton–including conservative local Edith–begin to receive letters full of hilarious profanities, rowdy Irish migrant Rose is charged with the crime. Suspecting that something is amiss, the town’s women investigate.
My first introduction to this new movie was via the “Green Band” trailer at my local Cineworld and I have to say I was sold as soon as the clever editing came on to subdue the language for the younger rated audiences. But a while after I was treated to the “Red Band” trailer with all the profanities left in place, I just wanted to watch Wicked Little Letters even more.
It’s always a joy to watch a performance from Olivia Colman and her role as Edith Swan is brilliant, she changes from the rather quiet and God-fearing woman who lives with her father and mother to something a lot more, well, conniving as she receives letters that are so shocking that you wouldn’t believe that anyone could come up with them!
Living next door to the Swan family are Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley), her daughter Nancy (Alisha Weir) and Rose’s boyfriend Bill (Malachi Kirby), all suspicion falls on Rose as she is accused of sending such terrible poison pen letters that are shocking the village.
But as time goes on the letters become more and more as other villagers receive them and the mystery of who is sending them carries on nicely for the first part of the movie. It’s been a while since I’ve been to the cinema and seen so many people laughing together during a movie, but Wicked Little Letters is a movie that has you laughing loudly at the profanities and more.
The cast in Wicked Little Letters works so well together from Colman, Buckley and Timothy Spall to the police who are trying to get to the bottom of what is going on including Anjana Vasan as Police Officer Gladys Moss, Paul Chahidi as Chief Constable Spedding and Hugh Skinner as Constable Paperwick.
Director Thea Sharrock (Me Before You) has brought us a very entertaining movie that not only has a great cast but also looks superb as well, the set and costume design look very of the time and brings the production to life. The comedy works so well with some great comic timing from Colman and Buckley throughout the movie.
Wicked Little Letters is one of the movies that I will no doubt be going to see again when it gets its UK release on the 23rd of February and most probably I’ll be adding it to my Blu-ray collection as well.
