Every so often a movie comes along that is so crazy that even the trailer just grabs your attention and screams out, “you must check this it”, and Willy’s Wonderland is one of those movies.
I have to start off by saying that over the years Nicolas Cage has taken on some strange roles such as his recent turn in Jiu Jitsu which was more of a cameo than a starring role, but his movies have moved along with more weirdness such as Mandy and Colour of Space, both of which I really enjoyed.
Willy’s Wonderland is no exception for the weirdness and this is a movie that is totally bonkers, Nicolas Cage plays a drifter that after his car breaks down he is picked up and taken to a small town to have repairs done to his car, but with no cash to pay for the work he is offered the chance to pay by spending the night cleaning the now deserted Willy’s Wonderland.
A theme-based children’s dinner that has a dark past that we slowly learn as the movie progresses, as the night progresses and Nicolas Cage, The Janitor, sets out to clean the place the demonic animatronics start to come to life and they are hungry for blood and it’s Cage’s blood they want.
As Cage kicks demonic ass we have some even more crazy moments such as Cage in a fight with Gus the Gorilla (Billy Bussey) and smashing its head in a urinal, yes I kid you not this is how nuts this film is and strangely enough, the craziness really works with the movie’s story.
But Willy’s Wonderland isn’t just about Cage vs Demonic Characters oh no, we also have some teenagers thrown into the mix for the “lives in peril” touch, we are first introduced to Liv (Emily Tosta) early in the film as she tries to burn Willy’s down only to be arrested which adds to the mystery of what is happening with the building and the demonic characters.
What I love about the the characters is that we slowly learn more about them as the movie progresses and we also learn more about why the Willy and his demonic characters want blood, but what really adds to the mystery is “The Janitor”. Cage’s character has no lines in the movie, except for a few grunts as he knocks back his quantity of energy drinks between kicking ass.
Giving The Janitor a touch of mystery certainly adds to the feeling that you get from Willy’s Wonderland, you get that sort of modern-day Pale Rider feeling from it, a stranger rides into town and sorts out the town’s problems before riding off into the distance, but obviously with plenty of blood splattering and ass-kicking.
I found Willy’s Wonderland a refreshing change from a lot of those big-budget movies that we are probably all used to these days, the movie is one that is so crazy that the storyline works perfectly with all the crazy stuff that is going on.
Fans of Cage are going to love this movie, it’s an hour and a half that gives you the chance to forget what is happening in the world today and disappear into a bonkers world of Demonic kids character and a silent ass-kicking janitor.
