With Marvel already dominating the superhero movie market, Wonder Woman steps up to the plate and knocks it out the park in DC’s new movie that takes us further towards The Justice League.
So a few years ago we had Man of Steel, which had mixed reviews and was a movie that had an extremely long and all out good vs evil battle with Superman vs General Zod over Metropolis!
Then came Batman V Superman, a movie that I personally was hoping would be a version of my favourite Batman comic book, The Dark Knight Returns, sadly this was not to be and although the extended cut is a better version the film was another in the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) that had mixed reviews and a rather long good vs evil battle, it did introduce us to Wonder Woman.
Following on was the next in the franchise, Suicide Squad, again this was another movie that didn’t really go down well with movie fans, which also had a good vs evil fight at the end (I see a pattern) it certainly looked like DC had hit three strikes! So all hope rested on Wonder Woman.
So after a short wait, Wonder Woman is now in UK Cinemas and it seems that DC seems to have got this one right, not only does it have a brilliant director, Patty Jenkins, but this has to one of the best origin comic book movies that I’ve seen in a long time.
Think along the lines of Captain America and the backstory that that one brought us, with his humble beginnings to all-out American hero, well Wonder Woman does the same.
We get a good back story of Diana (Gal Gadot) as we see her as a child growing up on Themyscira “Paradise Island” and her life of being an Amazonian Warrior, then Steve Trevors (Chris Pine) crashes into her life, bringing along with him the turmoil of the “war to end all wars”.
With Wonder Woman we have a movie that is not only visually nice to watch, it has a great cast, Gal Gadot and Chris Pine have a great chemistry on the screen, this really helps to cement the relationship that they have as they leave the island to end the war and bring peace to the world.
The film also has great use of colour with the vibrant colours of Paradise Island left behind once they leave and of the island, the colour pallet becomes plainer and subdued.
Director Patty Jenkins has really brought Wonder Woman to life on the big screen, she certainly knows how to bring out the required acting from her stars in the movie, personally, I think that having Jenkins direct the movie has certainly pulled DC out of the hole that the previous movies were digging deeper into.
The music by Rupert Gregson-Williams also builds up the atmosphere of the movie, giving it a very polished sound throughout the compositions on many of the scenes.
Oh, and yes, the film does follow suit of the previous movies and it has an over the top good vs evil battle for you to get engulfed in with the surround sound and RealD 3D which works nicely to give the movie the depth it needs in scenes, such as those on Paradise Island and during the action sequences.
Wonder Woman a tough act to follow!
So now that Wonder Woman has shown us that a DCEU film can be done without being a complete letdown, the wait is now on to see if the same can be done with Justice League when it arrives in cinemas on the 17 November, let’s hope that Patty Jenkins as shown them how it should be done and have made notes.
Wonder Woman is out on Blu-ray 3Dâ„¢, DVD and Digital Download on 9 October. groovy
