Arnold Schwarzenegger battles the Christmas rush in this high-decibel comedy of violence for those who like seeing reindeer punched out and department stores wrecked by rampaging mobs. At the centre of this maelstrom of mayhem is TurboMan, a toy which stressed-out businessman Arnie has promised his son for Christmas but has forgotten to buy.
Santa Claus: The Movie (1985) – December 10
A movie that is a fan favourite for many young and old. SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE tells the story of how a common woodcutter (David Huddleston) becomes the legendary Father Christmas. With a fantastical toy workshop run by elves and a herd of flying reindeer, Santa Claus has vowed to ensure that all good children are rewarded at Christmas. But the holiday season soon comes under threat when a rebellious but naïve elf called Patch (Dudley Moore) runs away to modern-day New York. Lost in a world he doesn’t understand, Patch finds himself being exploited by a villainous toy manufacturer (John Lithgow). Could this be the end of Christmas or will the festive spirit prevail? With this breathtaking new 4K version, viewers now have the opportunity to witness each and every detail of the film’s enchanting landscapes, whimsical characters, and dazzling special effects with unparalleled clarity and vibrancy. It’s a Christmas treat for the senses.
Bad Santa – December 15
An alternative for those wanting to go to the movies without the kids. A miserable conman and his partner pose as Santa and his Little Helper to rob department stores on Christmas Eve. But they run into problems when the conman befriends a troubled kid.
Home Alone – December 17
An eight-year-old troublemaker must protect his house from a pair of burglars when he is accidentally left home alone by his family during Christmas vacation.
Home Alone 2: Lost In New York – December 17
One year after Kevin was left home alone and had to defeat a pair of bumbling burglars, he accidentally finds himself in New York City, and the same criminals are not far behind.
Die Hard – December 22
One of my all-time favourite movies to watch at Christmas. John McClane, an officer of the NYPD, tries to save his wife Holly Gennaro and several others who were taken hostage by German terrorist Hans Gruber during a Christmas party at the Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles.
The Muppet Christmas Carol – December 23
“Light the lamp, not the rat!”. Michael Caine stars as the miserable old miser Ebenezer Scrooge who is visited by a number of ghosts on Christmas Eve and encouraged to change his cruel ways before it’s too late. He meets his Muppet-y match courtesy of a cast of supporting players that includes memorable turns from Kermit the Frog as Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy as his long-suffering wife, Emily, Statler and Waldorf as the spectral Marley brothers (woooooo!) and Rizzo the Rat as… himself.
It’s a Wonderful Life – December 24
An all-time classic to see at Christmas. Beset with personal and professional problems, George Bailey finds his previously happy life falling apart around him on Christmas Eve. Seeing no way out, George considers suicide from the edge of a bridge – but Clarence, his guardian angel, intervenes and shows George what his beloved hometown of Bedford Falls would be like without him. Shocked by what he sees and at the unforeseen circumstances of his absence, George reconsiders and begs Clarence to return him to the problems of the present and the loving community he has fostered throughout his life.
