Last night’s Cineworld Secret Screening 7 was finally revealed, the movie was the rather charming Scrapper, directed and written by Charlotte Regan and starring Lola Campbell and Harris Dickinson.
Living alone in her London flat after the death of her mother, 12-year-old Georgie (Lola Campbell) has to find ways to fend for herself and make believe that she isn’t living on her own, after a while, she must confront reality when her estranged father, Jason (Harris Dickinson), shows up out of nowhere.
Uninterested in a sudden new parental figure, Georgie remains stubbornly resistant to his efforts. As they both adjust to their new circumstances, Georgie and Jason soon find that they still have a lot of growing up to do.
I didn’t really know that much about Scrapper, all I knew was from the trailer that had been shown a couple of times at Cineworld and it was one of those movies that I was looking forward to checking out upon its release.
So when the title card came up at the Cineworld Secret Screening 7 for Scrapper I was excited to see how the film played out. The movie has very much of an indie feel to it, the story of a young girl facing the loss of her mother and the sudden return of her father after 12 years has plenty of emotion and some nice dark comedy thrown in to entertain the audience through its short runtime of 1h 24m.
Scrapper is a bit of a slow-starting movie, but as it progresses the characters build up on each other, and there is also some mystery to the movie as well. Georgie (Campbell) has something hidden in a room behind a locked door and it leaves it to your imagination for a while before we discover what is in the room and the power of Georgie’s imagination and the loss that she is feeling.
The movie is a rather heartwarming one and I did find it touching my heartstrings from time to time as well as making me laugh several times as Georgie and her father start to build up their long-lost relationship.
Director and writer Charlotte Regan has brought us a charming and delightful movie that has Campbell in her first cinematic role stealing the show with her wonderful performance as Georgie, her smart-ass comments and reactions to what’s going on are priceless.
Dickinson and Campbell work so well with each other and the scenes of them slowly building up the relationship is wonderful to watch and they make a great on-screen pairing.
Scrapper is certainly a movie that isn’t going to be for everyone in this day and age of the huge blockbusters, we had 16 walkouts in the first 10-20 minutes which is a shame as shortly after the movie really started to take off from there. This is a charming movie with a down-to-earth feel that touches on the emotions of the viewer.
