The new series The Bondsman, starring Kevin Bacon, has been released on Amazon Prime Video, so I decided to check it out and ended up binge-watching all eight episodes in one day!
Murdered bounty hunter Hub Halloran, played by Kevin Bacon, is resurrected by the Devil to capture and return demons that have escaped from Hell. With the support and obstacles presented by his estranged family, Hub learns how his sins led to the damnation of his soul. This revelation motivates him to seek a second chance at life, love, and a career in country music.
The first episode is a bit of a slow burner as we build up the tension of what is to come in this 8-episode series as Hub (Kevin Bacon) vanquished the demons back to hell after they have tried to break out, before bringing the final episode to a climax and a cliffhanger for a possible second series.
My first feelings as I went through the series was that it had a Ash vs Evil Dead vibe, but that’s no bad thing as The Bondsman has some rather dry humour that lightens up the show as the demons slaughter their victims in order to take on their likeness before Hub sends them back to hell!
Hub is helped out by his Mom (Beth Grant – Donnie Darko, Little Miss Sundshine) with his fight and she plays a great part as she takes it all in her strides kicking some demon backsides, also along for the ride is Hub’s wife (Jennifer Nettles – The Righteous Gemstones, The Excorcist: Believer), icindentley the soundtrack to The Bondsman features Kevin Bacon and Jennifer Nettles with some great country music tracks.
Hub’s son (Maxwell Jenkins – Arcadian, Lost in Space) also gets pulled into the demon world with his parents. Helping them all is Midge (Jolene Purdy – The White Lotus, Wandavision), who is someone in a similar predicament to Hub as she needs him to do his tasks in order to save her from hell.
The Bondsman is a lot of fun and works well overall. The introduction of a character at the end sets us up for a potential second season. The series takes us on a thrilling ride, featuring some gory moments that will appeal to horror fans. The cast is impressive, and the soundtrack is enjoyable to listen to. After watching the series, I even checked out Kevin Bacon’s music.
If you are a fan of the likes of Ash vs Evil dead and Stan Against Evil then give it a try.
