The day has arrived The Day of the Doctor, the day that all Doctor Who fans or Whovians have been waiting for the 50th Anniversary episode that has been broadcasted around the world!
With rivers of anticipation breaking the banks at Vue Cinema in Rhyl tonight a packed out screen of Whovians, armed with their sonic screwdrivers armed and a few with their fezzes firmly worn with pride, the clock ticked ever closer to 7:50pm.
After the trailers the screen faded and the BBFC screen appeared telling us that our wait was almost over, the screen fades, then we are greeted by a familiar face, no not the Doctor, but Commander Strax, informing us about our communication devices and the sound of popcorn screaming as you enjoy each bite!
Another fade, the screen turns to white, The Doctor appears, bringing us a brief introduction to 12D, sorry 3D, by now the excitement is at fever point, whoops and cheers from the audience erupt, the sound of sonic screwdrivers emerge as fans point to the big screen, in a kind of greeting with a fellow Timelord.
With a flick of The Doctors sonic, we’re in, we’re in a 3D world of Doctor Who and now the silence falls, thankfully not that silence or we wouldn’t remember a thing, now where was I, oh yes, The Day of the Doctor.
“The Doctors embark on their greatest adventure in this 50th anniversary special. In 2013, something terrible is awakening in London’s National Gallery; in 1562, a murderous plot is afoot in Elizabethan England; and somewhere in space an ancient battle reaches its devastating conclusion. All of reality is at stake as the Doctor’s own dangerous past comes back to haunt him”.
The excitement for Doctor Who in eye popping 3D!
One thing I have to say before even starting to give you a spoiler free review, if that is even possible but I’ll try my hardest, is that Steven Moffat is a genius, Moffat has brought us a celebration of Britain’s most loved character in a way only he could.
The story of the 3 Doctors John Hurt, David Tennant and Matt Smith is done in style, crossing story lines in to one moment in time, from the 11th Doctor (Matt Smith) hanging from the bottom of the TARDIS over London on route to the National Gallery with is well suited companion Clara (Jenna Coleman) by appointment of Queen Elizabeth I, to The War Doctor (John Hurt) battling the Daleks in the fabled Time War, then to the 10th Doctor (David Tennant) in 1562 with an altercation with a Zygon.
What really stood out, besides the 3D, was the on screen chemistry with Smith and Tennant, they bounced off each other beautifully , with perfectly timed comdeic moments moving in to serious and back again, a joy to watch.
The mysterious Doctor that bridges the gap between Paul McGann and Christopher Eccelstone’s Doctors, is something that I was really intrigued by from the trailers that the BBC had been showing, was he really has bad as they made him out to be, spoilers sweetie!
Bringing in Rose with the Bad Wolf character is a spark of genius from Moffat, lets face it Billie Piper’s character was much loved by Tennant’s 10th Doctor and she brings more mystery in to the overall feel of the anniversary episode that has you thinking deeper in to the story.
The 3D is perfect, the cast is spot on, the cameos are to die for, again spoilers sweetie, it’s easy to see why at the end of the showing of The Day of the Doctor the audience, including myself, produced a round of applause during the credits, something I haven’t seen happen in years.
The Day of the Doctor, was an experience that I wouldn’t have missed for the world and something that doesn’t happen that often, 50 years of a TV Show that is loved all over the world, with a simultaneous broadcast and a cinema packed out with adoring fans, what isn’t there to love.
Thank You Doctor Who For 50 Years Of Sci Fi Bliss
So that’s it for now, we’ve had the excitement of An Adventure in Space and Time on BBC2 recently, a docu-drama based on the very first outing for our beloved Time-Lord and featuring David Bradley as William Hartnell.
And with the 3D release of The Day of the Doctor, we have had an amazing celebration to 50 years of time travelling fun, it’s ups and downs and it’s moments of never thinking that our Time Lord would never return, so here’s to, hopefully, another glorious 50 years of The Doctor.
Watched by 10 million people, The Day of the Doctor peaked at 10.61 million viewers, beating the X-Factor on ITV which was watched by 7.7 million.
Now it’s time to wait for the Christmas special with the introduction of our new Time Lord, Peter Capaldi.
