With Halloween almost here, it’s time to check out a horror movie, so it was a trip over to Cineworld to make the most of my Unlimited Card and check out Ouija: Origin of Evil.
The sequel, or should that be a prequel, to 2014’s Ouija is set in 1967 Los Angeles, widowed mother, Alice Zander (played by Elizabeth Reaser) unwittingly invites authentic evil into her home by adding a new stunt to bolster her séance scam business. When the merciless spirit overtakes her youngest daughter Doris (played by Lulu Wilson), the small family must confront unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.

If you have seen the first movie then you will know the characters, but the prequel does have some issues that don’t add up to the original movie! In OUIJA, the incidents that happen in this movie were supposed to have happened in the 1950s, Ouija: Origin of Evil is set in the 1960s, which does knock the timeline out a little, but not a problem if you wasn;t too observant during the first movie and who was, it was a pretty dire movie!
So the movie starts in the house from the first movie and meet the family that we heard of, but didn’t really see that much off in the first film, well not much of them as normal folk! With a little slow start that has you wondering if it will have more thrills and scares that its earlier predecessor the film really takes off once the Ouija board comes into place and the doorway is opened to the afterlife.
Doris finds a “friend” by using the board and also starts communicating with her recently deceased father, all very spooky, but when thing take a dramatic turn and something more sinister comes through, things take a turn for the worse for the family.
One of the many things that tend to freak a lot of people out in films like these are possessed children and Doris certainly is possessed, well sort of, my personal point of view is when Doris bends over backwards (as seen in the trailer) she dies and the evil then takes over her body!
Ouija: Origin of Evil – Scream LOUDER
I have to say that there are plenty of moments throughout the movie that will make you jump in your seat, some are the obligatory horror movie moments of loud bangs, things in doorways at one moment and then not the next and creepy kids! But everything works nicely together, looks out for Doris as she clambers along the wall, now that really freaked some people out in the audience.
Ouija: Origin of Evil may not be an all-out horror movie with buckets of gore, but it certainly works for thrills and shrills as it moves along with  steady pace and keeps you interested in why this is all happening to the family and what has channelled its way into Doris.

I really enjoyed this one so much more than the first movie, this one seems more polished and I loved the look and feel of the movie, Ouija: Origin of Evil looks like has been filmed on film in the 1960s rather than on digital, but it appears that it was filmed in digital and then processed with some special effects to make it look like film such as the black dot that appears every 20 minutes to tell the projectionist to change reels and then the first few shots being a little jittery to look like the reel had been changed, nice touch.
The soundtrack, by The Newton Brothers, also works well for the movie, giving it the feel it needs to not only unnerve you but to also bring you into the world of the evil presence, vert much like they did with Oculus (look out for the mirror from Oculus in this movie).
If you want to see a scary movie this Halloween then check out Ouija: Origin of Evil and remember, “When you talk to the other side, you never know who will be listening”.
