In the small seaside town of Mellow Coast, Emily (Hannah Paterson) is trying to discover what has happened to her father, but as she searches for answers her friends start getting picked off one-by-one by an unknown killer.
I Scream on the Beach is a new 80’s style slasher horror from co-writer/directors Alexander Churchyard and Michael Holiday. During filming I got a chance to speak with some of the cast on set and in my latest interview I got an opportunity to actress Hannah Patterson a few questions about the film.
Q. How did you first get into acting originally?
I did youth theatre for 20 odd years and then I did drama at university. I stopped doing it for a while after I finished uni which was 4-5 years ago now, but then they asked if I wanted to be in this and I jumped at the chance!
Q. We are here today for I Scream on the Beach! can you tell me a little bit about what we can expect from the film?
It’s an 80’s style slasher film that has lots of twists and turns throughout which I don’t think you are going to see coming.
Q. Can you tell me a little bit about your character in the film?
I play Emily she’s the main character. Her dad goes missing at the beginning of the film and a lot of it is about the mystery behind her dad’s disappearance. She is very determined to try and solve the mystery and work out what happened.
Q. What attracted you to the character in the film?
I liked her back story and how determined she is to solve the mystery; she’s not your standard twenty-something female horror character! She comes off meagre, but there’s and underlying strength to her and she definitely goes through a change. I like that she wants to find out things and she gets a good ending as well.
Q. Are there any elements of the character which you feel reflect
some of your own personality?
I’d say I’m more like Emily as she becomes at the end. I’m not very meek and I’m definitely more outspoken! I definitely wouldn’t put up with Paula the way she speaks to Emily.
Q. With the an 80’s theme of the film did you help with the look and styling of your character?
I worked with the directors as I like working with the costumes myself. I bought some things and did lots of back work looking at the themes and watching a lot of 80’s films and just built on it from there. Because I enjoy doing it, it was really good to do that.
Q. What has been some of your favourite moments on the film so far?
I think this weekend has been really good as everything we have done so far has been individual days or with less people. This has been the first day of shooting where we have had a big crowd with extras and in a nice location with a proper dressed set, it has been really good.
That being said on my first day, I shot scenes with Tess (Gustard), who plays my mum, and despite her not being a very nice character Tess was so lovely and made me feel really at ease so that was definitely a highlight for me.
I am looking forward to some shoots coming up with lots of gory special effects, but I have enjoyed everything so far.
Q. What do you think makes I Scream on the Beach! stand out in the horror genre at the moment?
I think it’s a nice twist on your standard slasher film. The 80’s setting is new to us because its before we were born, so it’s nice to take us back to that. It’s got a lot of your standard horror tropes, but a lot of them are then twisted on its head.
Q. Do you have any projects which you are working on at the moment?
Just this at the moment, but hopefully other projects after this.
Q. If someone wanted to get into acting themselves what advice would you give them to get started?
Just do as many things as possible, just get yourself out there even for unpaid projects. The more you do the better you are going to get and more people are going to see your face. You can build up your list of credits and just exposing yourself. No, not exposing yourself oh my god (Laughs), get that exposure for yourself works well.
