OK folks, I know it’s been a while since my last review, but let’s get on with it, with the latest movie outing for Will Smith and son, Jaden, in After Earth.
After Earth is directed by M. Night Shyamalan and is based on an idea by Will Smith.
A crash landing leaves young Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, a millennium after events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help to save his father.
After Earth – Not the best Will Smith Movie
The thing to know about films is that the special effects don’t make a film and this is what has to be said about After Earth, don’t get me wrong, I think Will Smith came up with a good idea for the story of the film, but I think it lacks a little something.
After Earth could be described as a passage of rights film, as Jaden Smith battle through Earth to find a beacon to save his father’s life and prove that he has what it take to be a “Ranger”.
My problem with After Earth is it’s so slow and it seems just a vehicle for Will Smith to show the world what his son, Jaden, is capable of doing when it comes to, and I say this loosely, an action sci-fi movie.
The potential for an excuse to have the Earth over run with animals is short-lived, with only a few mediocre sections and some nice CGI, but even these don’t really pull the punches and over excite the viewer, shame really.
Sadly with all the hype that the film has received and from a trailer that makes the film look like a none stop, all out, action movie, it falls flat on its face.
Will Smith, isn’t exactly exciting as the majority of the film he sits in a crashed ship telling his son what to do and where to go, his stone faced approach which just doesn’t help the film along.
Yes the outer space sequences are nicely done the ships look good the planet they live on is well done, but there’s not that much to have you saying “wow, this is awesome”
Overall Thoughts For After Earth
If you’re expecting the wit that we’ve come to expect from Will Smith, then you’ll be disappointed, ignore the trailer, all the action from the film is in it.
