I remember seeing Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure back in the cinemas in 1989, it was a most excellent movie packed with time-travelling laughs and some brilliant music, now years after their Bogus Journey they are back to Face The Music and this time they bring their family with them.
Bill & Ted Face The Music Sypnosis
The stakes are higher than ever for the time-travelling exploits of William “Bill” S. Preston Esq. and Theodore “Ted” Logan. Yet to fulfil their rock and roll destiny, the now middle-aged best friends set out on a new adventure when a visitor from the future warns them that only their song can save life as we know it. Along the way, they will be helped by their daughters, a new batch of historical figures, and a few music legends -to seek the song that will set their world right and bring harmony in the universe.
Back in September 2020, I got to see Bill &Ted Face The Music on the big screen, so that’s now all three seen in the cinema, heading into Cineworld in Broughton we donned our masks to see how this long-awaited sequel would workout and of course I had to visit the cinema in my most bodacious Wyld Stallyns T-Shirt, it just has to be done.
Time to Face the Music
It’s been way too long waiting for a third movie from Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves as Bill & Ted and the years have certainly changed not only the characters but also the actors, let’s face it, since the last movie, Reeves has been in The Matrix and kicked backsides in three John Wick movies and Winter took a step behind the camera to become a director on many TV shows and documentaries.
The film does seem to start of fairly slow before it finds its footing to bring us not only what feels like how the original movies felt, but also gives us that nostalgic feel of those days of crazy films that were purely for the entertainment value to make us laugh and Bill & Ted Face the Music certainly had me laughing and laughing a lot.
Now with Bill & Ted having a family life, their daughters are introduced to the mix, now these are brilliantly played by Brigette Lundy-Paine as Billie and Samara Weaving as Thea, I have to say that Lundy-Paine was my favourite as the two and was just like Ted with the way she moved and spoke.
Sadly we don’t have the brilliant George Carlin as Rufus in Face the Music as he sadly passed away back in 2008, but he is remembered in the movie and has a cameo of sort, so just look out for that one.
But to carry the torch, as it were, for the Rufus character we ave his daughter Kelly played by Kristen Schaal (Bob’s Burgers, Flight of the Conchords) who brings that Rufus family tree to the comedy aspect of the film and I loved her in the role.
It’s also fantastic to see possible the world best bass player back with the guys, yes folks Death (William Sadler) is now in Hell in a new job, check out the scene with him in his pad in hell and take a look at the various posters and items he has which are great flashbacks to the other two movies.
So as I mentioned earlier Bill & Ted Face the Music does have a bit of a slow start and this works as you start to feel for the characters as after all the years since we last saw them things really aren’t going the way that they expected, there are some great moments when they get to meet their future selves and there are also some great “Oh right, I see” moments when the penny drops about how Bill & Ted and their wives are using the same time travelling phone booth at different times.
It’s Time Travel Dudes!
What always appealed to me about Bill & Ted back in 1989 was the time travel and in Face The Music, it’s great to see the return of those time-travelling lines that the Phone Booth races down through time and this time around the new time-travelling “egg” as well, but it’s not only the visuals that look good in the film, the sound is great, the loud bass sound as the booth lands and takes off sounds great, as does the use of the surround sound during the film, the effects also look good when time starts to unravel and various iconic building such as the pyramids and the Eiffel Tower disappear and appear somewhere else.
Bill & Ted Face The Music is an enjoyable flashback to the previous movies and has that nostalgic feel that fans like myself love, it’s a movie that had me laughing out loud and enjoying the cinema experience, it’s probably not going to be for everyone, especially those that aren’t big fans of the characters, but for me it’s the most fun I’ve had since being down in lockdown.
Bill & Ted Face the Music on Blu-ray
When it comes to movies there really isn’t any better way than seeing it on the big screen but with us all staying at home now and watching films on our ever-increasing TVs, Bill & Ted Face the Music on Blu-ray looks amazing the picture is crystal clear and the 5.1 sound uses all the speakers very well.
For those of us that saw the first film back in the cinema and have become fans of Bill & Ted this movie on Blu-ray is a pure delight to watch and it’s the perfect way to kick back for a night of laughter and to forget about the outside world for a while.
