With Valentine’s Day almost upon us, we thought we would celebrate Teddy Day, which is celebrated on the fourth day before Valentine’s Day, with a list of the top 5 highest-grossing movies with Teddys. This day was established as an opportunity to show the people in your life how much they are loved, particularly through the gift of a small teddy bear or other stuffed animal. It is a fun way to get connected with gift-giving, show that you care, and even get creative with the celebration time during these darker days of winter.
Here are five comedy movies that feature teddy bears, ranked based on their overall box office earnings:
Ted (2012) – Directed by Seth MacFarlane, “Ted” is the highest-grossing comedy movie featuring a teddy bear. It grossed over $549 million worldwide. John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg), a man whose childhood wish of bringing his teddy bear to life came true, now must decide between keeping the relationship with the bear, Ted or his girlfriend, Lori.
Ted 2 (2015) – The sequel to “Ted” didn’t perform as well as its predecessor but still earned a respectable box office gross of over $216 million worldwide. Newlywed couple Ted and Tami-Lynn want to have a baby, but in order to qualify to be a parent, Ted will have to prove he’s a person in a court of law. The franchise has now branched out to TV with a new prequel series based on the foul-mouthed Teddy!
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) – While not primarily a comedy, this sci-fi film featuring a teddy bear-like robot directed by Steven Spielberg grossed over $235 million worldwide. A highly advanced robotic boy longs to become “real” so that he can regain the love of his human mother. Many of you will know that this is a real tear-jerker that touches the heart.
The Happytime Murders (2018) – This comedy-crime film featuring puppets grossed over $27 million worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing teddy bear-related comedies. A bonkers movie. When the puppet cast of a ’90s children’s TV show begins to get murdered one by one, a disgraced LAPD detective-turned-private eye puppet takes on the case.
Brigsby Bear (2017) – Though not a traditional comedy, this comedy-drama involving a fictional bear character named Brigsby Bear garnered positive reviews. However, it didn’t have a significant box office impact compared to the others mentioned, earning approximately $711,615 worldwide. After being freed from his life in an underground bunker, a man sets out to make a movie of the only TV show he has ever known.
A few movies for you to check out this Teddy Day, there are plenty more movies out there with Teddys and I’m sure you will be celebrating Teddy Day with your Teddy Bear.
