I’ve been doing a bit of the Shocktober movie watching this month when I can, and after the first movie the other day I checked out Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice which is available to watch on the Arrow Video Channel.
Arriving in Gatlin, Nebraska, a news-reporter and his son get wind of a story about the youth in the town murdering their parents finds that a series of brutal murders are revealed to be worshipers of the corn-stalks and try to stop them before they carry out their plans.
This sequel to the 1984 movie that was based on Stephen King’s short story follows on from the first film as the bodies of the adults are discovered in a cellar, which grabs the attention of the authorities and the media.
Now if you have read my review of the first film the other day you will have seen how much I still enjoyed the film that starred Linda Hamilton, Peter Horton and John Franklin, but when it came to Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice which came along in 1992 (8 years after the first film), it becomes a bit more tongue in cheek over the original film.
There are many problems with the sequel, first of all the acting in isn’t on par with the 1984 film, it seems forced and wooden which leads you to losing interest with the characters rather quickly, so you don’t really care what happens to them.
I think what really clinched it for me during viewing of the film, is the moment that we are blatantly thrown a into a scene that could be classed a tribute to the Wizard of Oz as the evil children lower a house on an old woman who screams, “what a world, what a world” as the house traps her with only her legs showing, shortly after in another scene her sister arrives on the scene asking, “what have they done to my sister Ruby”.
The film is very cheesy, it’s such a shame that what could have possibly been a great sequel is really let down by so many things, but the 90s was like that with a lot of films as they usually decided to cash in on the success of a film in the 80s and having it fall flat on its face.
Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice could have been so much better, but as I mentioned before the acting, cheese and the overall story sadly let it down.
