It’s been another trip to Cineworld in Broughton for the latest Marvel Studios movie with Eternals in IMAX, so here are my thoughts on the new movie in the MCU.
Spanning thousands of years, Marvel Studios’ “Eternals” is an epic story featuring a group of immortal heroes forced out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s oldest enemy, The Deviants.
Now I have to say that there does seem to be some mixed feeling about Eternals upon its initial release and I was a bit dubious upon entering the cinema to check out the film after hearing what “critics” had been saying about the movie, but as with all my reviews, these are my thoughts and as most of you know I do like to give an honest opinion on anything I watch and review.
Eternals continues with Phase 4 of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) and much like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings we have been introduced to a new set of super-heroes on the big screen that we may not have heard of before in the previous three phases.
This latest movie introduces us to the “Eternals the new team that brings us a story that spans thousands of years and features a group of immortal heroes that have been brought back into the limelight to fight again and defeat The Deviants, creatures that the Eternals once thought they had defeated, their hopes of returning home are now stopped as they fight side by side again.
The Eternals, Ikaris (Michael Madden), Sersi (Gemma Chan), Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani), Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) Ajak (Salma Hayek), Sprite (Lia McHugh), Gilgamesh (Don Lee) Druig (Barry Keoghan) and Thena (Angelina Jolie) are the Earth’s last defence against The Deviants, but this movie has some nice twists and turns that takes the story into something much more than Super-Heros battling creature bent on destruction.
As I mentioned earlier there has been some negativity over the movie, but for me I really enjoyed it, there is plenty of humour dropped into Eternals to bring a smile to your face, the action sequences are nicely done, yes The Deviants may look a little too much CGI but that didn’t distract me from enjoying the movie.
Eternals builds on the introduction of the characters through the film by bringing them in slowly and we see how they have been getting on with their immortal life since parting ways, the use of the flashback sequences is nicely done as we learn more about them over the centuries.
OK, Eternals is no Avengers, but will we ever get anything that is going to bring us the love that we have all built up with Marvels first three phases, maybe who knows. I found myself enjoying some of the characters more than others. I wasn’t too sure about Dane Whitman (Kit Harrington) but after watching the post-credits scene things are brought to light and it’s looking like we have some exciting times on the way from Marvel Studios in cinemas and coming to Disney+.
Visually Eternals looks great when it comes to some of the scenes such as seeing Babylon brought to life on an IMAX screen and the rasing of the Eternals ship which you can see in the trailer which takes your breath away with the size of the IMAX screen as it rises.
Eternals in IMAX opens up the visuals and sounds
A lot of you that read my reviews here on Blazing Minds will see my renewed passion for IMAX after returning to the cinema after the pandemic allowed them to reopen, it seems that more and more directors are taking to the IMAX format and you will have seen from my Dune review that IMAX can certainly open up the cinematic world and Eternals is no exception.
Director Chloé Zhao brings us shortish scenes that make use of the IMAX format filmed with ARRI ALEXA LF and Mini LF cameras, both IMAX certified, with them mostly being used for those rolling landscape scenes and a few action sequences that work very well to take you into the IMAX movie experience.
Director Chloé Zhao stated in an interview in Harper’s Bazaar, “The future of cinema, the future of the theatrical experience—it’s very interesting to put that money on IMAX.”
As with the visuals in IMAX, the sound is also something that is more of an experience over the standard viewing screens, the bass and clarity of the sound in Eternals booms out of the powerful speaker system and you are pulled into the action sequences as you feel the sound! When it comes to quieter moments of the movie you can hear the subtle sounds such as the trees creaking and wind blowing, a fantastic movie experience. IMAX is a fantastic way to experience a film.
