The struggling all girl rock band Pussycake kicks off a new tour in the hopes that it will be the spark they need to resurrect their careers. Things don’t start off well, however, as they show up to their first gig to find the place deserted. The band soon discovers that being forgotten by their fans is the least of their problems, as they catch the attention of horrors from beyond our reality. With nods to favourite 1980s horror classics and much more, fasten your seatbelt for monsters, inter-dimensional journeys, kickass music and gore galore.
In a new exclusive interview on Blazing Minds, I got a chance to ask director Pablo Parés a few questions about the film Pussycake which will be making its UK Premiere at Arrow FrightFest on Friday 26th August at 15:30hrs

Q. Your film Pussycake has been selected to play at the Arrow FrightFest Film Festival. Can you tell us what we can expect from the film?
A. PussyCake is an independent horror and sci-fi feature made in Argentina by a team of movie fans who have been doing this kind of stuff for many years. The film was absolutely self-financed, as we love to keep creative control.
It is a very entertaining movie, with pretty girls, monsters, a lot of blood, screams and a lot of personality.

Q. You co-wrote the script with Maxi Ferzzola. What was the process for you working together and what were some of your influences?
A. The project was born more than 10 years ago. We met with Hernán Sáez, with whom I made the “Plaga Zombie” saga, and with Hernán Moyano, who had produced many horror films in Argentina. We outlined the story, but we couldn’t do it due to a lack of budget.
When we finally got the money to do it, we contacted Maxi Ferzzola, a great friend, and we suggested that he develop that old story. Maxi worked very freely and put together the script, coming up with a lot of new ideas.
We like to work as a team so that everyone feels part of the project. While filming the script continued to be worked on, many dialogues were improvised with the actresses and the action scenes were adapted to what was physically possible.
PussyCake is the sum of many ideas from many people.
Q. What were some of your influences for the look and style of the film?
A. We are a group of filmmakers who are very fanatical about movies from the 80s and 90s, we have seen the horror and sci-fi movies of that time hundreds of times and we try to emulate that aesthetic. The main influences for PUSSYCAKE were PREDATOR (1987), EVIL DEAD 2 (1987) and BAD TASTE (1987)… evidently, something special happened in 1987! We also try to make it have the rhythm of late 90s slashers like SCREAM (1996) or THE FACULTY (1998).
Personally, I tried to make it also have the spirit of my first film PLAGA ZOMBIE (1997), which over the years garnered a very loyal group of followers.

Q. Did you make any changes from the original script during filming?
A. Yes, we made quite a few changes but without substantially affecting it. We respect the story, but both the action and the dialogues were adapted to the possibilities of the moment and to what felt most natural when shooting.
Being a 100% independent film, we try to make the team members feel part of the project, to achieve that, we give a lot of space for new ideas or suggestions.
Q. What were some of your favourite moments during filming?
A. Everything that is action, gore and vomiting is always what I enjoy watching the most, but what takes the most work to film. These movies are an excuse to see that type of images and we try not to stretch the beginning of the film too much to get to the juiciest part.
The irony of this is that these sequences take a lot of time and work, which means that they are not much enjoyed when filming. A physical special effect takes hours of preparation and dozens of repetitions until it is right, it is a tedious job. But the result is very funny.

Q. Did you experience any issues during filming?
A. We tried to make a movie that feels bigger than the budget we had, this generated endless headaches, both on set and in post-production. It is a genre for which hundreds of thousands of dollars are needed and we were far from having such a sum.
The positive thing is that it is a 100% production of ours, in which we were able to have creative control of every detail, something that we would have lost if we were looking for a larger budget.
Q. What makes Pussycake stand out as something different in the horror genre?
A.
The current fashion in horror movies is to make dramatic, slow movies, without color, almost without special effects or gore. The market was flooded with mystery dramas and it even seems that filmmakers don’t like horror movies.
PUSSYCAKE is just the opposite, a fun and colourful movie, full of action, physical effects and a lot of gore. The audience will have a good time!

Q. What do you hope people take away after watching the film?
A. PussyCake is a movie that slowly and carefully leads the viewer to see horrible and quite unpleasant things. The film has a lot of vomiting, a lot of blood and is very intense, but it was planned so that it can be enjoyed by the standard audience that also consumes a soft content of today’s platforms.
Spectators are going to have a hilarious experience, like they haven’t seen for many years.
Q. Do you have any other projects which you are currently working on?
A. Always! I started making movies with the arrival of VHS cameras, recording with my friends and today I try to continue along the same path, whether I have a budget or not. I don’t follow the standard path that most directors take. I love exploitation cinema and I’m trying to go down that path a little more every day. I’m currently working on a project that tries to recapture the spirit of Russ Meyer’s FASTER PUSSYCAT KILL KILL.
I grew up in the 80s. For me, cinema is real, dirty and imperfect. My dream is always to be as close as possible to movies like ROBOCOP or EVIL DEAD 2, where CGI was practically not used. I know I’m staying “out of fashion”, but it’s what I like and what I want to continue doing.
SPANISH VERSION: ¡Siempre!

Q. If someone was looking to write and direct their own film what advice would you give them?
A. My advice is to choose about 10 movies that you really like and watch them over and over again, until you learn how they are made in detail, learn how each sensation, each effect is achieved. Nowadays we have so much content at hand, that seeing the same movie again is a habit that is being lost, but it is one of the best ways to learn to make movies.
Write stories thinking about the resources with which you have at hand, so that nothing stops you, so that the projects are done yes or yes. Put the shooting date first, then everything else, because there is always a good excuse not to do things.
If you’re on a tight budget, taking sound on set can be a headache. I prefer to record without taking sound and then do dubbing. It speeds up the process a lot and helps imperfect actors.
Don’t spend the entire budget on filming, leave some money for post-production. It is a longer stage, lonely and boring, to which one usually arrives without money.
Lastly, find someone who is in charge of distributing and selling the film, since it is quite a painful task for an artist, almost a spirit breaker!
