In a new Exclusive Interview on Blazing Minds ahead of Horror-on-Sea I got a chance to ask Writer/Director James Wall a few questions about the film ‘Billy‘
Billy will play at Horror-on-Sea on Sunday 12th January at 12:30pm.
Q. Your film has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival. Can you tell us what we can expect?
A. ‘Just like last year, it’s just a simple comedy short with a slight horror twist to it’.
Q. What were some of your influences when writing the script?
A. ‘I’m still not much of an influenced person, but I suppose films of toys coming to life, Toy Story, Child’s Play, being the primary examples of that genre, did have an impact on this, I just wanted to take that concept and show a more grounded approach to it’.
Q. What were some of your influences for the look and style of the film?
A. . ‘I wanted this film to look like an actual horror throughout, making the audience believe that this an actual scary film, until the ‘monster’ is revealed’.
Q. Did you make any changes from the original script during filming?
A. ‘I did originally wanted to do a full-on horror based on the idea, but the more I think about it, the more I realised how silly the idea was, so I decided to change it to a quick comedy, that’s styled like a horror film’.
Q. What were some of your favourite moments during filming?
A. ‘The whole thing was fun to film, it helps that since the idea was short and simple, I didn’t require a ton of resources.
Q. Did you experience any issues during filming?
A. ‘None during the actual shoot, but there was always the possibility of someone walking in, I didn’t tell anyone what I was doing so it would have been hard to explain myself’.
Q. What makes it stand out as something different in the horror genre?
A. ‘I suppose the idea that even concepts that have been made into horror films, can still be made into a joke’.
Q. What do you hope people take away after watching the film?
A. ‘I just want people to have a quick laugh again, ’.
Q. Do you have any other projects which you are currently working on?
A. ‘Not at the moment, but I am looking for work, so hopefully this film will open a few doors for me’.
Q. If someone was looking to write and direct their own film what advice would you give them?
A. ‘The same advice I gave last year, I’ve you have an idea and want to do it, do it! And if you feel brave enough to share it, share it!’
