In another interview leading up to the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival I got a chance to ask director Jason Wright a few questions about what we can expect from the horror short ‘All Dressed in White’ which will be playing at Horror-on-Sea on Saturday 15th January at 10:00hrs
Q. Your short horror film All Dressed in White has been selected to play at Horror-on-Sea. Can you tell us what we can expect from the film?
A. All Dressed in White is a short film about a young bride getting ready on the morning of her wedding day during the apocalypse. Her fiancé Jordan, is meeting her at the Church, but will she make it on time? We decided to use fresh, new, local actors for this short film, some of whom we had seen in theatre, to give them some real experience on the set of a movie. This gives the audience some great dialogue and good characterisation.
Q. What attracted you to script for All Dressed in White which was written by Ginger Marie Merante
A. Essentially, it was different. We first came across the story as a short story in our anthology book Zombie Chunks, which is available to buy on Amazon, and really enjoyed the way the voice overs throughout told the story.
Q. Did you make any changes from the original script during filming?
A. Yes, we did. As with any film changes have to be made as you can’t get locations that exactly match what the writer had described for the budget the film is being made on, or you can’t get the props or do the effects that the writer has envisioned. So, you have to adapt and recreate, but without losing the writers story – just adapting the location and the effect slightly so that it all still works. I think we have achieved this.
Q. What were some of your favourite moments during filming?
A. So many favourite moments. The cast in this short film were a group of young theatre actors, so for me the most memorable thing about the entire shoot was watching them develop their skills and watching their confidence grow. One of my favourite shots is of Jesse’s flashback in the field with the sun shards, it just looks so incredibly beautiful. Otherwise just the camaraderie and the laughs with a great cast and crew.
Q. Did you experience any issues during filming?
A. It is oddly challenging filming scenes that are almost entirely told via voice overs. Getting the timings correct can be complicated, but we managed with some great teamwork and excellent note taking by the script supervisor. Our other major challenge was budget, as is often the case. Due to budget constraints and availability of cast and crew we had to film on weekends alone, this made hair and make-up continuity sometimes a bit of a challenge.
Q. What makes All Dressed in White stand out as something different in the horror genre?
A. The black and white aspect of this short for sure make this stand out, as well as the fact that the majority of the story telling is done through voice overs. It makes for a completely different feel to a story. Also… it is quintessentially a love story in the apocalypse.
Q. What do you hope people take away after watching the film?
A. If the audience could take away how much hard work goes into making a short film on such a low budget and then consider how much more work goes into a feature film on a low budget that would for me be incredible and I think for all the other low budget film makers here. We also hope to help inspire young film makers and young actors to get into the industry and believe that anything is possible with determination and hard work.
Q. Do you have any other projects which you are currently working on?
A. We are currently in post-production for Mannequin, which we are hoping to have ready for release early 2023 and almost ready to go into post with The House That Zombies Built, which we have been filming locally from August 2021. We have just released Torture (2021), which we began filming what feels like many years ago and also have on the market Zombie Wars (2020) and Acid Pit Stop (2019). We are in pre-production for Zombikini… which we are hoping to film in 2022/23. Q. If someone was looking to write and direct their own film what advice would you give them?
A. Make sure you have a very good team around you of people that you can trust. The three things I would look at first are: script, location and budget.
