In a new Exclusive Interview on Blazing Minds ahead of Horror-on-Sea I got a chance to ask Writer/Director Russ Tribe a few questions about the film ‘Disappearance at The Rock‘
Disappearance at The Rock will play at Horror-on-Sea on Friday 17th January at 5.30pm.
Q. Your film has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival. Can you tell us what we
can expect?
A. It’s a found footage horror mystery short. All ad-libbed to a written story for that genuine vibe. Much loved Horror-on-Sea regular Ayvianna Snow very kindly agreed to feature in a small way and I think the
HoS crowd will find that fun.
Q. What were some of your influences when writing the script?
A. I mean, Blair Witch is the ultimate found footage movie and there is a subtle nod to that. Otherwise I feel this is its own unique beast.
Q. What were some of your influences for the look and style of the film?
A. I definitely wanted to take advantage of the Gibraltar setting and I feel we did that for sure. Being found footage, it’s all shot on an iPhone 14 Pro and you even see us holding our Zoom sound recording device in places, so you get away with showing the kit as it’s part of the story!
Q. Did you make any changes from the original script during filming?
A. Slight changes due to locations available. But otherwise the same.
Q. What were some of your favourite moments during filming?
A. Seeing the Barbary apes stealing someone’s expensive watch was amusing. We also saw one steal crisps and start eating them. There’s another incident that made it into the film, so I’ll let you discover that one for yourselves!
Q. Did you experience any issues during filming?
A. It was slightly busier than we’d have liked at the finale location. We had to make it look like the area
we were filming in was closed off to the public!
Q. What makes it stand out as something different in the horror genre?
A. The location for sure – how many horrors are set up the top of The Rock?!
Q. What do you hope people take away after watching the film?
A. I hope they enjoy it – its hard with a short to make you care about characters but within our brief
16mins we get to know the two leads well. I hope people are also inspired – it’s amazing what you can
achieve with an iPhone and a gimbal.
Q. Do you have any other projects which you are currently working on?
A. Yes – I’m writing my next feature film, LSD TV. Look out for the Indie GoGo and (hopefully) Horror-on-Sea premiere in a future year!
Q. If someone was looking to write and direct their own film what advice would you give them?
A. Go for it! Don’t procrastinate. I’m an expert in that. Get some Monsters in the fridge and binge write! When directing, make sure you get a good team assembled rather than take on too much yourself. You’ll
thank me later!
