In a new interview on Blazing Minds ahead of the world premiere at Horror-on-Sea, I got a chance to ask co-writer/director Tony Mardon a few questions about his segment of ‘Video Shop Tales of Terror 2: Lust and Revenge‘ called Invasion of Studio 69.
Video Shop Tales of Terror 2: Lust and Revenge will have its world premiere at Horror-on-Sea on Saturday 18th January at 20:00hrs.
Q. Horror anthology ‘Video Shop Tales of Terror 2: Lust and Revenge’, has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival. Can you tell us what we can expect from your segment of the film entitled ‘Invasion of Studio 69’?
A. I co-directed this with Alex and had a blast. I don’t want to give much away but I will say this…you won’t have seen aliens like this before…
Q. What were some of your influences and process when writing the script with Lauren Jane Barnett and Alex Churchyard?
A. We got together at Lall’s house and basically chatted through Alex’s original ideas. I love a collaborative effort and we seemed to gel very well. Lall put a DVD on featuring B Movie trailers which helped!! After that, it was down to Lauren.
Q. What were some of your influences for the look and style of the film and did this change for each segment?
A. When you see Studio 69 you will get a sense of what we were looking for. Cross The Twilight Zone with the 1970s porn industry and you will have an idea of what to expect…
Q. Did you make any changes from the original script during filming?
A. I didn’t, but I know Lauren tweaked a bit.
Q. What were some of your favourite moments during filming?
A. Well it’s always nice to work with great people and we did whilst shooting this. Most people I’d worked with before and some I hadn’t. The short itself is pretty bonkers so the whole shoot was such fun. Will Marshall in costume is a sight to behold!!
Q. Did you experience any issues during filming?
A. I didn’t. I worked mainly with the actors, Alex on the technical side. It’s an ambitious short to be shot over two days and I think we all did a great job. I know Alex has been working very hard in post though.
Q. What makes it stand out as something different in the horror genre?
A. This question has brought a smile to my face. You’ll have to wait and see.
Q. What do you hope people take away after watching the film?
A. As I said above, even thinking about it makes me smile. I hope people enjoy it as much as we did making it.
