In a new exclusive interview on Blazing Minds ahead of the film’s Blu-Ray release from 101 Films, I got a chance to ask actress Stacey Coleman a few questions about her role in the award-winning British vengeance thriller ‘Derelict‘ from Director Jonathan Zaurin.

Q. Following a successful festival run, your film Derelict is now getting a Blu-ray release. Can you tell me a little bit about what we can expect from the film?

A. Expect gritty drama, a search for justice, a journey of grief with heart-wrenching but also some heart-warming moments, all filmed beautifully with an exceptional cast.

Q. You play Rose in the film. How did you get involved and what attracted you to the character?

A. I actually helped my friend Suzanne record her self-tape audition for Abi reading in the part of Rose. I was immediately drawn to the character and her fierce love for her sister. After Suzanne got the part, she told me they were looking for a Rose, so I got in touch and asked if I could do an audition tape. Ironically, Suzanne then read in for Abi on my tape, and they must have liked it as I was offered the part! 

Q. What sort of preparation did you do for the role and are there any elements of the character which reflect your own personality?

A. Preparation-wise wise I did the usual work, thinking about Rose’s history, where she grew up, her relationship with her father, his death, the impact of all those things and of course, her history with her sister was incredibly important, so making decisions about that was vital. Suzanne and I also discussed this at length to try to connect the characters as sisters. 

I have sisters myself, so I could specifically relate to this and Rose’s drive and need to protect her. I could also relate to the feeling of hopelessness Rose feels when things are out of your control, and as much as you want to solve everything, you can’t. 

Q. What were some of your favourite moments whilst making the film?

A. Working with Suzanne was an absolute highlight. To get the opportunity to work with someone who is not only immensely talented, but also is your friend, is such a unique opportunity and I’m very grateful for it. As well as this a highlight has got to be working with the incredible team behind Derelict! Jonathan (Zaurin), as a director, works in a very freeing way, allowing you to really step into what your character wants.  The team on set were so welcoming and made me feel right at home, which can be hard to do when you are coming into an established team for a few days.  Also, it was my birthday whilst filming and the team surprised me with a cake and a pressie… what a treat! 

Q. Did you experience any issues whilst making the film?

A. No issues as such. We did have a little problem with the weather not playing ball for the final shot, and after two hours of trying to get the shot and lots of hugs in the rain (originally the sisters hugged at the end), it was called off and rescheduled for another day. Luckily, the sun shined bright that day and I think it is the perfect end! 

Q. What do you hope people will take away after watching Derelict?

A. Well, firstly, I hope they will take away what an absolute badass Abi is (and Suzanne playing her!). But also, that the power of love and family is truly enough to get you through even the darkest days. 

Q. Do you have any other projects which you are currently working on?

A. I am currently working on a theatre show with my production company, In Parallel Productions, that I run with Suzanne, called You Can Have It All…Can’t You?  Which is a comedy sketch show around the biological clock and pressures we face in society…so a very different vibe, but lots of fun all the same!

Q. If someone is looking to get into acting, what advice would you give them?

A. Work hard, be kind, jump in/get involved and connect with other creatives, try new things, stay true to yourself and share the love…celebrate others’ success around you as much as your own! Remember your worth and that it’s not a race, it’s a job for life and never too late to start!
