Over the weekend we were honoured to be asked along to the Rhyller Thriller Oscar Party which brought a special Oscar night to the Rhyl Little Theatre with a red carpet laid out for people to walk and enjoy a night of short films, a special screening of the superb Demi Moore movie The Substance and some awards.
People were greeted with a complimentary glass of champagne and a chance to chat with the organisers of the event before heading into the classical-looking auditorium for short horror films to enjoy before the evening’s special screening.
Having an event like this in town is fantastic, as it demonstrates a passion for the horror genre that both enthusiasts and those who typically don’t engage with horror can appreciate. It provides a wonderful opportunity for people to gather in a great venue and show their support, especially following the unfortunate closure of the Vue Cinema nearby. I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with some of the attendees about movies and horror.
With a great selection of short films coming to an end, we were all treated to a screening of the superb film The Substance, a movie that I praised when I saw it back last year, sadly the film didn’t get a showing in Rhyl. The Rhyller Thriller team have done a superb job bringing The Substance to the town and for it to be shown on a big screen for the first time in Rhyl and it went down a storm.
After the showing of The Substance, the awards we announced for a selection of gongs.
Best Kill – In A Violent Nature for the Yoga Pretzel
If you’ve seen the film then you will certainly remember the rather brutal and blood-curdling kill.
Best Horror Film – Longlegs
Osgood Perkins’ brilliant film with maybe one of the scariest roles from Nic Cage.
Best Performance in a Horror Film – Demi Moore for The Substance
A well-deserved win for Demi Moore in a superb role in such an amazing movie.
Chad Jones spoke to us about the event and said, “We really love Rhyl and doing something a bit different and special for people to enjoy is right in our wheelhouse. Giving that classic cinema experience in this building is really special, and the feedback we have had tells us that people really appreciate and enjoy it.
Alongside our love of all things Horror and trying to bring more things to the town we adore I’m really proud to promote the community aspect of what we do. Loneliness and mental health struggles can affect absolutely anyone at any time and we believe that building a community based around affordable cinema and these events can really help combat these issues. We try to create relationships and friendships that can truly blossom through shared interests with the final aim being to empower the community one scream at a time.“
