There is something for all Sci-Fi fans in Fiona Angwin’s new book Cold Dead Cosplay, a murder mystery that takes on the Cosplay/SciFi/Events twist and for those that attend events will have a deja vu feeling.
A Supernatural Fantasy set at a Sci-Fi Convention. When a group of metal detectorists discover an ancient fairy hoard and sell some of it, they don’t expect its owner to come after them. When some cosplayers preparing for a big Sci-Fi event buy their perfect accessories on-line, they never imagine it could lead to their deaths. When a police team trying to catch a murderer have to blend in amongst crowds of cosplayers, they find aspects of the investigation far more challenging than they ever expected. When a murderous dark elf can hunt for his prey without attracting more than an admiring glance, it makes for a Sci-Fi gathering with a difference. Who knew cosplay could be so dangerous? Cold Dead Cosplay takes a dark, comedic but affectionate look at the world of cosplay and Sci-Fi Conventions.
Many of you that read the posts here on Blazing Minds and follow the social media will know that I attend the fantastic SciFi Weekender and have been doing since SFW4, so when Fiona let me know that she was basing a book on an event that is loved by thousands of people I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy.

Covering the event for so many years has been and still is a dream come true and there is even a paragraph in the book that has a photographer character based on me, now that’s an honour.
So let’s get on to my thoughts of Cold Dead Cosplay, first of all, I was intrigued to see how Fiona would bring the world of Cosplay to the book, let’s face it there are some crazy things that go on at the events and Fiona has brought them to the book brilliantly.
With the story happening, loosely, at one of the biggest and most popular Sci-Fi Festivals in Europe, Fiona has taken everything that those of us that attend the event will pick up on, the book brings you the memories of the sights, sounds and emotions that many of us that have been to the events will have firmly rooted in our minds. This, in turn, brings an essence of realism to the book.
Putting aside the event itself, the story that Fiona has created in Cold Dead Cosplay is a fascinating one and shows off her skills with her imagination, I found myself getting pulled in with each page turn of the book and I swear I’ve met a lot of the characters in the book, no wait I have!
With many of the characters having some connection to those that may have attended the events and obviously those that haven’t, such as a murderous Elf, it’s great reading through the book and finding either yourself mentioned in one way or another and reading parts and thinking oh that’s such and such, brilliant.
If you are after a little something different then Cold Dead Cosplay is certainly the book to check out, It’s not very often that I say a book is loads of fun and especially in the contest of a thriller/horror/fantasy, but Fiona Angwin has taken Cold Dead Cosplay to a level where its familiarity works to bring the images clearer in the mind when reading the book.
It’s a well-constructed book that certainly holds your attention with every page turn, well worth having in your bookcase.
