Unlike many other genres of music, pop is in itself a genre that gives equal importance to both an artist’s music and the artist’s presence. It’s why making catchy songs is never enough to break-in. One also needs to commit to making themselves a part of their music. This is why Gabe Furtado catches our eye, especially with his brand new single, “Flowers.”
With positive, upbeat cheeriness and a vocal inflection that’s addictively sweet, Gabe Furtado makes a huge impression every time we hear about him. His last project, “Last Goodbye,” shifted away from his typical style, a powerful and emotional piece. It received critical acclaim, which led to a lot of hype and hope for his upcoming project, “Flowers.” So, how did it turn out?
“Flowers” is fascinating, showcasing a lot of that positive energy Gabe Furtado is known for, and for a good reason. Gabe wrote the single as a love letter to himself, a positivity song that symbolizes his mindset in life and music. The effect lands excellent, and it
makes for a truly fun and pleasing tune to listen to.
The melodies and hooks of the song are made up primarily of light synths, keeping a steady rhythm thanks to an accompanying drum beat. Musically, “Flowers” is relatively simple, focusing more on Gabe’s vocal performance. It’s a good choice, as it keeps the song sounding light and pleasant. It also pairs up with Gabe’s delivery quite well overall.
The song’s vocals are great, really putting a spotlight on Gabe’s impressively unique voice. He has a certain raspiness to his inflections that make him stand out from the light pop synths. Of course, every one of his songs has this, but it works incredibly well in “Flowers,” contrasted by the overall light tone that the single shoots for.
When it comes to the song’s lyrical content, we’re again greeted by some pleasant ideas, though there’s a bit of darkness that seeps into the song. Nevertheless, it symbolizes Gabe’s struggles in life and his music career and balances things out with a healthy dose of hope and optimism. There’s a lot to like here, especially if you find yourself doubting yourself sometimes.
“Flowers” is a great single sign of things to come from the promising pop artist. We can’t wait to see what else he has coming, especially with his new album coming soon. Good pop music is always a lot of fun, especially with a great personality backing it all up.
