If there’s one thing that Roland Emmerich does well and that’s the big extravagant disaster movies and Moonfall is no exception to the rule! We popped over to Cineworld to check out the new movie.
In Moonfall, a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler (Academy Award® winner Halle Berry) is convinced she has the key to saving us all – but only one astronaut from her past, Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson, “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It”) and a conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman (John Bradley, “Game of Thrones”) believes her. These unlikely heroes will mount an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love, only to find out that our Moon is not what we think it is.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen a film as bonkers as Moonfall, but it’s one of those films that has you on the edge of your seat with all the over the top special effects of the world on the brink of destruction as the moon leaves its orbit and starts ripping Earth apart.
Moonfall is a bit like 2012 with an Independence Day twist, as the aliens take over the moon in an attempt to wipe out the human race, with only a ragtag crew of Patrick Wilson, Halle Berry and John Bradley being able to save the planet as they head to space to defeat the “swarm” that has burrowed into the moon.
Moonfall does have a bit of a slow build-up, the movie starts in 2011 and introduces us to Harper (Wilson) and Fowler (Berry) as they come upon the strange-looking entity that is on a course of annihilation of the human race.
We jump forward to the present day and the movie build up the tension as along with the characters we slowly learn more about what is going on and the special effects get more and moreover the top.
Moonfall is certainly one of those popcorn movies that are fun to watch, there’s nothing complicated to figure out and we are certainly treated to some of the best “end of the world” CGI that I’ve seen in a few years. Cast wise we have a great list of the cast to bring us the story, although I would have loved to see more of the brilliant Donald Sutherland, maybe we will get some deleted scenes or an extended edition when the film has its home release.
Many years ago Moonfall would have been one of those summer blockbusters, but nowadays audiences have moved on to films with more twists and turns, plus the MCU has taken the epic movie further forward over the year, but that’s not to say that Moonfall doesn’t bring the excitement to the big screen, in fact, I found myself laughing and moving on to the edge of my seat on several occasions, even on those moments that I could see coming a mile away.
I did find myself thinking of Independence Day a couple of times towards the end of the movie, but I suppose that’s because that’s a movie that is so ingrained in my mind that I do see many comparisons to the movie, but you will see what I mean when you see Moonfall.
John Bradley certainly adds to the comedic side of the film to break up the tension of the end of the world, some of the humour is dry but it works throughout the movie and Berry, Wilson and Bradley work well together on-screen.
Moonfall isn’t going to be for everyone, but if you enjoyed Independence Day and 2012 then this is a movie that you may want to check out, for me I really enjoyed it and all the over the top silliness.
