It’s been a long wait for that official third Ghostbusters movie that we had all been waiting for, but finally, Ghostbusters Afterlife has arrived in cinemas and I decided to check out the new movie in IMAX over at Cineworld in Broughton thanks to the Cineworld Unlimited Card.
From director Jason Reitman and producer Ivan Reitman comes the next chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe. In Ghostbusters Afterlife, when a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind. The film is written by Gil Kenan & Jason Reitman.
I was a teenager when the first movie came out in 1984 and it’s always been a film that no matter how many times I watch it I always find myself laughing out loud and loving every moment of it, the second movie in 1989, although not as good as the first one, but it is still a fond memory of my teenage years, then after a massive wait we got a reboot of sorts with Ghostbusters: Answer The Call which had so many mixed reviews, but we won’t go into that release too much, although I did enjoy the RealD 3D release.
Now we have the official third movie, which has been mentioned in the press releases that it is “based on the 1984 film ‘Ghostbusters'”, the new movie is indeed a sequel to the movie and it not only brings us some great new characters and a new ghost, muncher, that is very much like slimmer but the film also brings us the answers to the questions we have asked over the years, such as “what did happen to the original Ghostbusters?”.
I won’t go too much as those of you that have been hiding from social media updates that are rife with spoilers will want to find out the details by seeing Ghostbusters Afterlife for yourselves, all I can say is you are in for some great surprises and you will need some tissues!
When it comes to the feel of the new film, it really does have that feeling of the 1984 release and I did find myself going back to being a teen again and laughing very loudly, finding myself pulled into the film and enjoying the cinema experience. It’s great to see a film that brings so much joy when you are watching it and not just that, I went with my family and watching my nephew being transfixed to the screen throughout the film reminded me what I was like when I saw the first film at his age.
The use of the effects in the film is superbly done with not only CGI but physical effects as well, which you don’t seem to see too much these days, but they work brilliantly. The cast are a sheer joy to watch and the kids are brilliant and I am hoping that they will go on to do a sequel in the near future.
Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Logan Kim and Paul Rudd all have a great form on the big screen that helps bring the story to life, this really does feel like a true Ghostbusters movie, the story by Gil Kenan & Jason Reitman is great and Jason Reitman has certainly done us proud with his directing, but let’s face it with his dad, Ivan Reitman, involved as well he really had to do a good job and he does.
It was lovely to hear some of the Elmer Bernstein themes through the film that makes watching the film even more nostalgic, Rob Simonsen‘s soundtrack is wonderful to listen to and it fits into the Afterlife perfectly.
Seeing Ghostbusters Afterlife in IMAX
So as I mentioned I went to see Ghostbusters Afterlife in IMAX, seeing a film on an IMAX screen is always a cinematic experience and some movies such as DUNE need to be seen in IMAX, my only issue with the IMAX release of Ghostbusters Afterlife is the lack of IMAX Extended Aspect Ratio.
The film is in a widescreen format throughout and there are several scenes where I found myself thinking that they would have looked amazing if the screen had expanded to take us into the action even more, but despite this little quibble, Ghostbusters Afterlife looks so crisp and vibrant on the huge IMAX screen and the sound mix really made up for the lack of IMAX E.A.R., the sound booms out with the loud scenes and the quieter scenes were great as you could hear subtle sounds from all around you.
If you are a fan of the Ghostbusters franchise then this is the film that you will want to see in the cinema, make the most of IMAX and enjoy the 2h 4min of fun, but as I mentioned earlier you will need a tissue at one point. Like most films these days this one also features two scenes during the credits, so don’t leave the cinema and stay in your seats to check them out.
