I’d been waiting for a while for the next chapter of the franchise and yesterday I popped to Cineworld in Broughton to check out Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire in IMAX 3D.
The epic battle continues! Legendary Pictures’ cinematic Monsterverse follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new adventure that pits the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence—and our own. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire delves further into the histories of these Titans and their origins, as well as the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond.
Godzilla x Kong starts as it means to go on with plenty of action and superb visual effects, plus plenty of Titan action to please most fans on the Monsterverse.
The new movie takes place mostly in Hollow Earth which looks amazing in IMAX with the Expanded Aspect Ration scenes that take us into the amazing-looking landscapes, add to that the 3D and you get the feeling that you are on the journey with the team that heads to Hollow Earth to discover where a signal is coming from and why Godzilla is heading to Hollow Earth.
Along with the returning characters Ilean Andrews (Rebecca Hall), Bernie Hayes (Brian Tyree Henry) and Jia (Kaylee Hottle) is Trapper (Dan Stevens) who I loved to watch, Stevens plays what can only be described as Titans as we first meet him as a dentist to help out Alpha Titan Kong in a scene that had me laughing loudly at.
With the Monsterverse franchise, you know what you will get with each film and Godzilla x Kong is no exception and it didn’t disappoint me from the opening scene to the end credits. The film is a non-stop roller coaster ride of action in glorious IMAX, the film does spend more time with Kong than with Godzilla but the scenes we do get with Godzilla are brilliantly done on a huge screen, then when we get the team-up of the Alpha Titans it’s all out destruction of city while they fight with one of the strongest Titans in the Monsterverse as the seats rumble with the bass from the powerful IMAX sound system you feel like you a standbyer to the carnage.
For me I found Godzilla x Kong to be the best in the franchise so far, it was fun and packed with all the action we could want from a movie in the Monsterverse, I’ve been a fan of Godzilla since I was a young child with the original 1954 Toho movie when the Monsterverse launched in 2014 with Gareth Edwards movie it was a sign that we were going to get some great movies and they have been brilliant to watch on the big screen.
We get to see more of Kong with his emotions toward things and we also get some moments of cuteness with a small ape that at first you will think is a little bugger, but later has those moments that make you go, “aw”.
Adam Wingard has taken the franchise and ramped it up with the previous movie and even more with this one, I’m hoping that there are more to come for the Titans on the big screen.
Before I end my review I have to mention the soundtrack from Antonio Di Iorio and Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL, it’s the perfect soundtrack for the movie with its moments of subtleness to its up-tempo moments that lift the scenes with the IMAX sound, now this is one I’ll be adding to my CD collection (yes I still buy CDs)
The movie “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” was filmed using IMAX-certified digital cameras and includes over 45 minutes of exclusive Expanded Aspect Ratio (EAR) content, only available in IMAX. If you want the best possible experience of the epic showdown, IMAX is the way to go. The IMAX 1.90:1 aspect ratio provides up to 26% more picture, making the audience feel completely immersed in the movie. The entire movie has been designed to draw viewers into an experience that can only be fully appreciated in the way the director intended.
Does Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire IMAX have a post-credit scene?
Most films these days seem to have a teaser to an upcoming sequel or something to give you that bit extra after the credit, but Godzilla x Kong: The New Empires doesn’t have any post-credit scenes so you can leave the cinema if you wish or appreciate all the people that are involved in the production and sit through the credits.
