It’s time for the end of a saga (again) as Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Michael Myers return to the big screen in Halloween Ends the movie that has been making waves since its cinema release, so I popped by Cineworld to check out this final chapter in the latest movie to see how the movie pans out for myself.
Halloween Ends is set four years after her last encounter with masked killer Michael Myers in Halloween Kills, Laurie Strode (Curtis) is living with her granddaughter (Andi Matichak) and trying to finish her memoir. Myers hasn’t been seen since, and Laurie finally decides to liberate herself from rage and fear and embrace life. However, when a young man stands accused of murdering a boy that he was babysitting, it ignites a cascade of violence and terror that forces Laurie to confront the evil she can’t control.
Halloween Ends Review: Warning may Contain Spoilers!
I have been a big fan of the franchise since the first outing of the characters back in the original movie in 1978 and over the years the franchise has had various timelines to try and bring back “the shape” to terrify cinema-going audiences. The original Halloween was a movie that terrified me and many others when it was first released but the sequels fell short of the scares, much like the H20 and now the H40 timelines, even Rob Zombie’s reboot timeline movies didn’t give me the chills that John Carpenter’s original did.
2018’s Halloween, which is part of the H40 timeline wasn’t and last year’s Halloween Kills certainly left us wanting more and the promised final battle of Strode and Myers, something that the trailer for Halloween Ends promised us, or so we thought.
Halloween Ends seems to take a step away from Michael Myers and the sheer unstoppable power and taste for bloodshed, it takes a while before we see Myers, now hiding in the sewers after the severe beating by the townsfolk in Halloween Kills, this is not “the shape” that we have come to know and it’s not until Corey (Rohan Campbell) who is accused of the murder of the child in the opening scenes, is set upon by a group of teenagers and finds his way to the sewers that Michael is reintroduced. Shortly after Myers’ first kill after so many years, he seems to magically regain his strength and lust, he also has a connection with Corey.
This movie is more about Corey and the movie takes us down that road of what could possibly be a soft reboot of a new “Myers” as Corey becomes the murderer that the town had been accusing him of being.
My disappointment for Halloween Ends is that I was really looking forward to the big battle of Strode and Myers, something special that would really take us on a roller coaster ride of the two fighting to the bitter end, but sadly the 111min movie builds up Corey and Allyson’s relationship much more than that final showdown.
OK, yes we do get an ending to Michael Myers, but it is just so disappointing and almost as if Michael has given up and his demise is so easily done by Laurie. Then with a slightly gory scene after a procession through Haddonfield, he is polished off in the teeth of a car crusher in a junkyard, the character really deserved a better way to go, in my opinion.
It was great to see Jamie Lee Curtis reprise her role but I would love to have seen her kick ass more, there are some nice touches with the cast from previous movies in the franchise and a nice touch with one of the victims from Halloween Kills.
This may be the movie that ends the Halloween franchise with Michael Myers, but I can sadly see a “next-gen” reboot at some point in the near future.
