Camp Death III in 2D! is a new horror from director Matt Frame which has been selected to play at Horror-on-Sea Film. I got a chance to ask Matt Frame few questions about what we can expect from the film.
Q. Camp Death III in 2D is a new horror parody which will be playing at Horror-on-Sea, what can we expect from the film?
Honestly, one can expect an 82-minute barrage of brain stabbing stupidity. It’s a comedic ride that only about 50% of viewers are able to complete without saying aloud “why the hell am I watching this?’
Q. Why did you choose to use Friday 13th 3D as your main film to parody?
Those films are ripe for parody because they’re total trash. I mean, I LOVE those first five films with all of my heart but even as a rabid fan I have to admit that they are pretty horrible from start to finish.
Q. Did you ever consider doing the film in 3D?
Not really. In fact, the addition of the ‘in 2D!’ title was added at the last minute. Once I realised I wanted to make a sequel (that would be shot in true 3D-title: Camp Death III Part 2 in 3D!) then it made sense to alter the title of this film.
Q. In addition to yourself you have 17 credited writers for the story. How did the idea for the film come about and how was the story developed?
I created the characters and wrote the screenplay. However, the actors further developed their characters over about 3 months of workshops. By the time we got to filming they were on autopilot and contributed bits of dialogue and ideas. So, I gave pretty much all of them a story credit because of that.
The idea for Camp Death III in 2D! came to me while kayaking. The lake was reminiscent of Crystal Lake and so I stupidly thought ‘Hey, a Friday the 13th parody would be a super EASY film to make. I’m going to do it!’
Q. It is always difficult shooting on low budget, did you encounter any difficulties during filming?
I can’t imagine that any low budget film production isn’t fraught with difficulties. However, I can say with total honesty that the four years of production on Camp Death III in 2D! was the single most difficult challenge of my life. I’m a 47-year-old with Bipolar disorder. Believe me, I’ve had a few rough patches along the way. This one tops them all.
Q. Are there any elements of the finished film which are different to the original script?
I’d say about 50% of what you see on screen wasn’t in the original script. Some of it was improvised stuff we shot on the fly but most of it (ie: the musical number, speeder bike chase, the entire last 30 minutes) was added as the production went further into delays.
Q. As you started the series with part three are there any plans for a sequel or prequel?
Tentative plans to make a 3D sequel but difficult to know if that will happen. It will require a demand for it. It’s early days so fingers crossed we’ll get the opportunity.
Q. What was one of your favourite moment during filming?
Saying “Cut, that’s a wrap” on our last shot. It’s a cynical thing for me to say but it’s the truth.
Q. Do you have any other projects which you are working on?
At present helping my friend Gerald Varga complete his feature Murder Box, other than that I’m riding ‘Camp Death’ to the bitter end. Whether that’s in 6 months or 6 years is yet to be determined.
Q. What advice would you give to someone who is looking to write and direct their own movie?
