Psycho Magnet is a new horror-comedy from director Michael Paul which has been selected to play at Horror-on-sea. I got a chance to ask Michael Paul a few questions about what we can expect from the film.
Q. Psycho Magnet has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival, what can people expect from the film?
I think in a world where movies start to blend together, people will get a chance to see something they’ve never seen before. It’s an unusual film with unusual characters, ridiculous situations and lots of laughs.
Q. What attracted you to the original script for Psycho Magnet?
I’m a fan of quirky unusual characters I haven’t seen before. Plus, I have an attractive wife, who wrote the script.She’s hard to say no to. We’ve made several films together, and we wanted to take a different approach to the horror genre that took advantage of the improve talent in our area.
Q. What were your inspirations for the look and style of the film?
I was looking to capture the isolation and claustrophobia of small-town middle America.
Q. What were you biggest challenges when making the film?
We faced lots of challenges during production. Staying focussed on such an entertaining set was a fun one. I encouraged our improv performer actors to do what they do best, and that often meant following crazy tangents and then needing to steer the ship back on course. Although, trying to record audio while a Christmas parade routed right in front of our location was probably the biggest challenge. We keep better track of parade schedules now.
Q. Did you have to change or adapt any elements of the original script during filming?
We lost a main character after we had a fair amount in the can, but we did rewrites to make it work.
Q. What was one of your favourite moments during filming?
Convincing my wife, who plays the lead,to sing drunkenly in the alley. I am the singer in the family, and it’s not in her nature to belt out a song, especially in public places.
Q. Do you have any other projects which you are currently working on?
Yes, since Psycho Magnet we’ve worked on several short films, Redhead, Cheese Fries and Strange Clowns. We are currently in production on another short as well.
Q. If someone is looking to direct their own movie, what advice would you give them?
Surround yourself with people that will keep pushing you. Low budget film making is driven solely by passion and if that passion runs out, your project is done for.
