Sure she is a top EDM dance music artist but Kim Cameron is also an acclaimed childrens book author of the Seaper Powers series. Besides entertaining it also teaches young children important environmental issues such as sea health and life. With the full animated film just out along with a colouring book and soon a game too, we thought we would ask Kim a few questions.

Seaper Powers is a children’s series following the adventures of Emma and her sea creature friends. The latest book, “In Search of Blue Jays Treasure” has been recognized by the Purple Dragon Book Awards. Ms. Cameron has been touring elementary schools and libraries across the country reading her stories and encouraging ocean conservation to children.

“I believe I never really grew up….that is probably why I get along with kids so well.  I wanted to create a series that allowed kids to go back to adventure stories while handing them few reasons why our environment and relationship with animals is so important.” -Kim Cameron

From Kim… The book series was inspired by a little girl I met on tour in St. Barths.  During a break in my set..she told she loved octopus.  I was intrigued by this…since most little girls have a tendency to love starfish or dolphins.  I ended up writing a song on the beach the next day with my guitar player.  He suggested I write a story that incorporates the song.  Soon a book was born…then a series, and now a movie.

About the film itself.. Embark on a magical ocean journey in this feature-length animated film for young adventurers and families of all ages. Meet Emma, a little girl on vacation off the island of St. Thomas, who discovers magical sea-grass that gives her the power to talk to sea life. Soon enough, Emma has a new group of sea-critter friends. There’s Oliver, a shy young octopus who’s full of adventure but too timid to explore with his friends; and Steve, an out-of-place starfish who discovers he has powers of his own. Together, the quirky trio set off on a grand adventure to find buried treasure, along the way learning important lessons about friendship, self-confidence, protecting the environment, and the power of imagination.

1. You’ve had an awesome career working with young people. Did this inspire you to begin writing your books for young readers?

Well, a little.  The ‘star’ or the main character of my book series is based on a little girl who I taught for many years.  At 6 years old, this little girl had a voice of angel. She truly had perfect pitch.  At 8, she had expanded her ranged to that of a 14 year old.  It was incredible.  She also was a natural at animation, meaning, her ability to tell stories was astounding.  This is why she was chosen to be one of my voice over actors in the first couple of audio books.  So, I guess, the answer is yes, young people inspire me.  I relate to them, because, I suppose, I never really grew up.

2. When you were a child did you read a great deal?  If so what were some of your favorite books?

I was a reader, but not a big reader. If given the right book, I could not step away from it, but if the book did not capture my attention, I found it difficult to keep turning the pages.  The Dr. Suess series as a young child was my go to, but as I got older, I was hooked on Nancy Drew.

3. What authors have inspired you?

Well, that spans greatly.  Candance Bushnell is just fun fun fun.  For a completely different direction, Graham Hancock.  His conclusions make you reach way deep outside of the norm.    But, I guess, any author who can grab my attention in the first 10 pages inspire me.

4. You’ve produced an amazing series of books. Are you getting any feedback from your audience?  Maybe requests for more specific adventures?

So far, all of the feedback has been very positive.  The biggest surprise came from mothers of 2 year old’s.  They told me the lengths of the books (approx. 1 hour each), are perfect for them to do the laundry while their toddler is listening and watching the kindle.

5. Its unique that you are publishing your stories in a audiobook format.  Do you feel that more children want that format since most youngsters are now in the digital age?

Given our ‘Covid’ times, I suspect audio books are the rage.  I mean, how much TV can you really watch without being bored?  And audio book was intended for those who are sitting in the car, needing something to do, while mom and dad drive them to their next adventure.

6. Do you think the digital era of publishing will one day replace the library of printed books?

I hope not!  I love to hold books. I still buy BOOKS.  There is something special about turning pages and having the illustrations jump out at you.  Something, I personally, do not experience in a digital form.

7. Some children’s authors such as Judy Blume have been criticized for bringing in too much reality AKA real life scenarios into their books for children. What are your thoughts on this if any?

I think real life is ok, but I kind of believe we are too focused on those types of stories.  I would like us to bring back more adventure, more imagination, more fun.  This year has been so challenging for kids, I believe they need a break from reality.  Books can provide that break.

8. Your storytelling format and the plots are incredibly entertaining.  Do you hope one day to see these become animated films for kids?   

Well, funny you should say that!  The first book is currently being made into a 94 minute full length feature film, called Seaper Powers:  The Movie!   It should be completed before Christmas!  I am very excited about this new chapter in my life.  So, ask me about this in a few months when I finish the film.

9. I’ve always found that books that both parents and their kids can enjoy are some of the best examples of storytelling.  Do you feel your books can be enjoyed as a family?

My intent in writing the book series, was to make it fun for both parents and kids alike.  I believe families are enjoying them, at least, I hope so.

10. You obviously care a great deal about young people. Your tales are very captivating.  What’s next for you in terms of you next book or even your next project. If it’s not top secret!

If everything goes well, I hope to start writing the script for the Seaper Powers movie sequel……crossing all fingers!
