Robert Wainwright dies after breaking his deal with the Devil, passing that debt onto his estranged daughter Morgan. She soon finds herself in a never-ending cycle of terror as she is brutally murdered then resurrected over and over again, each time losing a piece of her soul. Now she must discover why this is happening and break the deadly cycle in order to escape.
In a new interview in the series leading up to Horror-on-Sea Film Festival, I got a chance to ask Deathday writer/Director J. Horton a few questions about what we can expect from the film.
Q. Your latest horror film Deathday has been selected to play at Horror-on-Sea. Can you tell us what we can expect from the film?
Expect the unexpected. Deathday is crazy blend of several horror sub-genres. Every time the lead character is killed, she comes back in a different kind of horror movie. We got Ghosts, body horror, zombies and even the devil himself.
Q. What were your influences when writing the original script for the film?
I was heavily influenced by John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) and The Thing (1962).
Q. What were some of your influences for the look and style of the film?
John Ford with a dash of Italian horror.
Q. Where there any elements of the original script which were adapted during filming?
No. It was all straight up.
Q. Did you experience any issues during filming?
I was working full time cutting promos for the SYFY Channel at the time, so I worked 9 to 5. Then came unto set around 6 pm and worked til 6 or 7 am. Rinse and repeat for 22 days.
Q. What were some of your favourite moments during filming?
Anytime we splattered Rachel with blood.
Q. What makes Deathday stand out as something different in the horror genre?
It’s a clever mix of sub-genres and features a strong female lead.
Q. Do you have any other projects which you are currently working on?
I’m working on a slate of documentaries and am producing a Action/Fantasy script called 16 Bits.
Q. If someone was looking to write and direct their own film what advice would you give them?
Get out there and do it. Don’t wait for some else to green light you.
