We’ve been bringing you a lot of exclusive interviews recently, and to break the chain, we have a new interview as Blazing Minds caught up with actor, producer, and writer Josh Witcher to talk about his latest film, Trapped, streaming now on Amazon Prime, Google Play & iTunes.
-Can you share how the Trapped project originally came together, and what drew you to it?
All our films are centred around different aspects and effects of mental health, and raising awareness is very important to me. The subject matters are very strong but also very real. I personally know people who have suffered at the hands of domestic violence and alcohol abuse growing up. I have always been a big fan of Gary Oldman and wanted to do my own take on Nil By Mouth.
-As a creative producer and performer, how did your dual role influence the development and execution of Trapped on set?
Being both sides of the camera opens up a lot more of an understanding for not just the visual side but film making as a whole, which allowed me to connect with the cast as well as the crew when it came to problem solving and achieving our goal.
-What were the biggest challenges you faced during production?
There were many, which is often the case when film making some big and some small. I would say the day that our D.I.T guy cleared the memory card from our sound guy without backing it up to a hard drive. It just so happened that the actors dialogue he lost was Geoff Bell one of the biggest stars of the film.
-How have your experiences in earlier projects influenced your approach to Trapped?
I think it’s always about learning and growing. I grow and get better every project I work on and take what I have learned onto the next production. It’s never going to always go according to plan but with the right amount of ambition and maturity and the right team, you can and will be able to handle anything.
-Looking at your broader career, is there a type of role or genre you haven’t tackled yet but would like to explore next?
I’ve enjoyed every character I’ve played and written. I am currently writing comedy at the moment, as this is a genre I want to explore next.Â
-Having now worked both in front of and behind the camera, what advice would you give to actors looking to move into writing or producing?
Just go for it! Don’t wait for the perfect time because it will never come – just get some script writing software and start writing, learn as you go and team up with experienced producers and writers that you can learn from. That’s how I did it, and I’m still very much a student.
