Belfast’s very own bubble-grunge alt-rockers Wynona Bleach have released their latest single “I Deserve That”! Â
“I Deserve That,” is a cautionary tale about the cultural bin fire that exists around the chronically online and how important it is to touch base with the ‘real’ and natural world. Guitarist Jonny Woods says: “it’s a track about brain rot and how social media and tv can be poisonous and make you feel worthless and bad about yourself, and how you should go outside, and touch grass every once in a while.” Amen to that. We can see the damage and fallout this ‘disease’ has caused all around us, every day.
To underscore this sentiment, the video takes a hard swipe at how YouTube and podcast culture can warp young people into political and religious extremism when, really, they should go outside with real friends, meet new people and have real, personal connections, as opposed to virtual ones. I mean, let’s breathe, be real, have genuine discourse! Ditch the BS!

As yet unnamed Sophomore album is set to land later in 2025. Watch this space!Â

So much going on! We decided to ask the band about a few things…
‘Wynona Bleach’ is an interesting band name – what made you choose that?
We were bleaching our hair while watching Wynona Ryder on TV 🙂
You manage to successfully blend indie rock with ‘bubble grunge’ pop – what made you take this route?
It’s our two favourite genres but we really just write what we like and it tends to line up pretty well with that! It was a review in the Irish News that dubbed us “Bubblegrunge” and we really liked it!
How do you, as a band, set about writing a song? Is it a democratic group effort?
Depends entirely on the song. Some songs pop into the world fully formed by one member, others we collaborate on. There are songs on the new album written entirely by one member (Sometimes Jonny, Sometimes James) other songs are a jam session and are then fleshed out as a band in the room together. We always credit the whole band regardless as without each other, nobody would hear the songs.
The latest single is called ‘I Deserve That’ –Â What inspired the track?
There are too many internet dwellers stuck permanently in the online world and not living life with real people and it’s mainly about them. It came from an older riff and melody we came up with years ago and the song sort of evolved over the last few years of playing live!Â
What’s in store for Wynona Bleach in 2025?
We most definitely have a new album release scheduled for 2025, with more singles from that at the beginning of the year. You’ll have to stay tuned to our Instagram for some other VERY cool international show announcements too!
