Today we bring you our thoughts on the new shark movie Into The Deep starring Richard Dreyfuss (Jaws), Scout Taylor-Compton (Halloween), Jon Seda (La Brea), Stuart Townsend (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) and AnnaMaria Demara (Lost in Space).
Off the coast of Madagascar, a young father and his daughter, Cassidy, share a playful swim until a looming shark attack shatters their idyllic moment. Traumatised by the incident, Cassidy grows into adulthood plagued by fear, until her grandfather, Seamus, an oceanography professor, takes her under his wing to conquer her demons. Years later, Cassidy, now married to Gregg, embarks on a dive expedition to Reunion Island, only to find herself entangled in a perilous situation involving modern-day pirates and a vengeful great white shark. Forced to confront her deepest fears to survive, Cassidy must navigate treacherous waters both physical and psychological, grappling with her past trauma while facing imminent danger.
Now for most of us when it comes to movies about sharks we really can’t get any better than JAWS, Into The Deep isn’t the strongest film in the genre but we do get Richard Dreyfuss back with a movie about a shark so that’s a bit of plus for the film.
Instead of just getting a film about a shark attack on divers, which let’s face it we seem to get a lot of those that see people stuck underwater or adrift, with Into The Deep we get the twist that while diving for treasure the crew are taken over by pirates (no not that sort lol) that demand that the divers go down to get their drugs while trying to defend themselves from the Great White that has already had a taste of one of the diver with an arm for lunch!
As you would expect not everything goes to plan for both parties and the sharks certainly seem to be the ones that come off best in this forced partnership.
The film flows between the present day and flashback with a young Cassidy and Richard Dreyfuss, which does drop the flow of the film a tad, before bringing us back to the boat with some choppy (excuse the pun) action sequences that lift the tension.
Some nicely done underwater sequences in the film give you the unnerving feeling that there are sharks in the water. It is a little bloodthirsty for its 15 certificate, but as I mentioned this isn’t one of the best shark movies out there if you are a fan of the genre then it may be worth checking out.
Into the Deep is directed by Christian Sesma (Lights Out) from a script written by Chad Law (Hero Wanted) and Josh Ridgway (The Flood).
