Jurassic World Dominion IMAX Review, the dinosaurs return for another outing

It’s been a few years since the iconic Jurassic Park landed in cinemas back in 1993, 29 years later old and new come together in Jurassic World Dominion in IMAX the sixth film in the franchise and the last in the Jurassic World trilogy.

Four years after the destruction of Isla Nublar, dinosaurs now live–and hunt–alongside humans all over the world. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history’s most fearsome creatures in a New Era.

Jurassic World Dominion IMAX Review

I remember back in 1993 when I first saw Jurassic Park and it blew me away with the fantastic effects and dinosaurs finally coming to life in an authentic way that had cinema-goers jaws hitting the flaw, over the past 29 years the films have had their highs and lows with many fans having favourites, then in 2015, we were introduced with a soft reboot of the franchise with Jurassic World with new cast and characters bringing the dinosaurs back to the big screen after the original trilogy.

7 years later we have made it to the final in the Jurassic World Trilogy and the cast return 4 years after Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom to complete the story that we have been following for almost 30 years, as with any of the Jurassic movies the special effects are stunning and although we may have all got used to the dinosaur effects they still bring a smile to my face and during my screening there were plenty of the children’s voices throwing out wow’s of excitement as the dinosaurs came on to the IMAX screen.

JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION IMAX

Jurassic World Dominion in IMAX really doesn’t fail to bring us some great effects, both CGI and some fantastic physical creature effects, it also has some great action sequences throughout the film that do put you on the edge of your seat, look out for Owen (Chris Pratt) being chased through the streets by some Raptors while he tries to evade them on a motorbike, the sequence looks and sounds stunning with the IMAX sound blasting out of the speakers.

Although Jurassic World Dominion does have a rather long run time of 2h 26min it still seems a little rushed and for me I felt like there was so much happening that was done in a way to tie up the current trilogy in one film, that 2h 26min races by, the film is not at all boring as some may have said, this is a film that closes the trilogy nicely, but at the same time does leave it open to kick off with maybe another trilogy as humans and dinosaurs live together in harmony (hopefully).

It is great to see the Jurassic World cast of Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy), Bryce Dallas Howard and Isabella Sermon back together and to be joined on-screen with the Jurassic Park cast of Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, it’s almost as if we finally have the torch passed on to the current trilogy from the previous one, it’s all very nostalgic for those of us that saw the original movie back in the 90s on the big screen.

Colin Trevorrow certainly shows his love for this franchise and it’s great to see him return to direct the film after directing Jurassic World in 2015, there are some great Easter Egg moments that take us back to the original trilogy such as the way Laura Dern takes off her sunglasses much like Sam Neill did in Jurassic Park, it’s lovely to hear John Williams’ iconic theme used throughout the film and the soundtrack by one of my favourite film composers Michael Giacchino (Spider-Man: Homecoming) is a sheer joy to listen to.

If you are a fan of both of the trilogies then you are no doubt going to really enjoy Jurassic World Dominion, it’s certainly not the best one if the six-film franchise, but it is a film that you can sit through and enjoy while munching on your popcorn in the cinema, it does have its flaws but most films do these days.

Jurassic World Dominion in IMAX

So I checked out Jurassic World Dominion in IMAX and Cineworld, the film is optimized for IMAX and isn’t shot with IMAX cameras, but I did notice that the film does a certain look to it and I do believe that this is sure to Jurassic World Dominion being shot on Kodak film instead of digital, the tech stats for the film say that it is in a 2.00:1 ratio and the screening we had to optimize the film for IMAX is shown in a 1.90:1 ratio which is noticeable via thin black strip at the bottom of the screen.

But what makes up for the lack of being shot with IMAX is the sound mix that is an IMAX-6 track recording which really blasts out with thunderous bass as the dinosaurs roar, explosions vibrate the seats and subtle sounds can be picked up with precision, this really made the film more enjoyable as the sound is something that can help a film along much more than all the special effects that are thrown at us these days.

If you are a big fan of the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World films then this is a movie that you will want to see on the big screen and the bigger the better.

Keep your eyes peeled for a Limited Edition Box Set of the Jurassic Park and World movies coming soon.
