Just A Girl, written, directed and produced by Claudia Grace McKell, focuses on an ex-karate champion who is losing her hearing and her battle to come to terms with it.
The cast includes Claudia Grace McKell (The Guard of Auschwitz), Jacob Anderton (13 Graves), Tyler Fayose (Departure, Skybound), Sally George (The Guard of Auschwitz) and Ian Burfield (The Selfish Giant, The Angel of Auschwitz) Alongside, director of photography, Gary Rogers (Abatement), gaffer Andre Govia (Stranger Things) and first assistant director and co-producer Michael McKell (Allied, Where Hands Touch, Essex Boys).
The film aims to promote hearing loss and martial arts as two key vocal subjects in the film. There are 11 million people with hearing loss across the UK, that’s around one in six of us, I wanted to make a film which explores the grieving process of losing your hearing. As a child, It was discovered I could not hear properly, I underwent surgery which has left me with tonal hearing difficulties. From my own experience and others, I created a script about a young woman losing her hearing and her journey to acceptance. I also wanted to showcase karate in film, next year karate will be one of the introductory sports at the Tokyo Olympics. I believe it’s important to encourage women into professional sports, and the film showcases this.
