So today I caught up with David Jones from The King’s Storehouse and we had a chat about how everything was going and about the Rhyl food bank that is helping out those that are less fortunate than others.
The King’s Storehouse started in 2012 when the church (Wellspring Christian Centre) saw those that had fallen on hard times and with the members helping out by buying an extra few cans and packets of food to help out people out and these were taken to the church, since 2012 The King’s Storehouse has grown and many local businesses and people are supporting the cause and showing support of what the church is doing to help others.
Many will know David and Sarah from the BBC documentary, Banking on Benefits, that was shown a few months ago about their work and will have seen some of the shocking conditions that people in Rhyl are living in and how they are struggling to eat and even afford to have electricity to gas to cook with and to keep warm, in this day and age it’s terrible that people should have to live in the conditions that they do and be at the point of not eating for days due to lack of money.
This is where The Kings Storehouse comes in to action, they not only supply food parcels for those that are in a state of desperation, but also bring in support and care for those in these terrible predicaments, by delivering the food parcels personally, people have chance to have someone understanding to talk to and get advice and help from people who care for those that have fallen on hard times, which is not their fault.
I’ve known Sarah for a while, she runs a retail photography business, which is my first port of call for my photography equipment, and once the doors close on the shop she is out helping David with food parcel deliveries, David and Sarah work tirelessly to help others and their passion for what they do can been seen in all the hard work and time that they put in to helping others.
While talking to David today and learning more about what The King’s Storehouse do, I could see from his face how much all this means to him and during our conversation he was plucking on my heart-strings, I’ve been at a very low point myself in the past and although not as bad as some of those he was telling me about, I wish that during my time in one room bedsits I’d had someone like David and Sarah to help me from days of not eating and worrying about being thrown on the streets due to a lack of paying the rent and no one to support me.
But it’s not just the food parcels that they deliver, they also help people to have a better way of life, those of you that did see the BBC documentary will have seen the squalor that some people have to put up with, water running down the walls due to damp, no money to live on due to paying extortionate amounts of rent, leaving them with no money for food or heating, The King’s Storehouse have helped many people out in these situations.
As mentioned on the website and by David himself, they are a hand up rather than a hand out and all the work they do is appreciated by those that they have helped, in this day and age should we have to have food banks, when you look in to the many towns, not just Rhyl, it’s shocking to see the statistics of those that need help from the food banks such as The King’s Storehouse, but if it wasn’t for people like David & Sarah Jones and Pastor Mike Bettaney, some people would never have the help that they need.
Thank goodness for them being around to help, without them many would never get the essentials and nourishment that they need to survive.
We should all show our support for our local food banks and doing something as simple as throwing in a few more tins and/or packets of food in to our trolleys and then dropping them off to the food banks is something we can all do, grab those buy one get one free items that have a long shelf life and take them to the local food bank to help out.
I would like to say thank you to David for our informal chat today and for opening my eyes further in to what The King’s Storehouse do, they are a credit to what we can all be doing, showing love and help for our fellow man, giving their time to others less fortunate, something that we can all do and should be doing.
