I love the Cineworld Secret Screenings, the excitement of what the film could be and last night at the first-ever Public Cineworld Secret Screening the film was the brilliant Le Mans ’66 starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale.
American car designer Carroll Shelby (Damon) and driver Ken Miles (Bale) battle corporate interference, the laws of physics and their own personal demons to build a revolutionary race car for Ford and challenge Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966.
Directed by James Mangold (Walk The Line, The Wolverine), Le Mans ’66 is a movie that I’d been looking forward to since being teased with the trailer a few months ago, this 2h 32min movie is certainly one that had me glued right from the start of the Public Cineworld Secret Screening and it seems to have done the same with many of the people that packed into the Cineworld in Broughton, only 6 people walked out, but this is all part of the secret screenings, we usually have people doing the same in the Cineworld Unlimited Secret Screenings if it’s not the film they were expecting or have no interest in, their loss on this one.
Right from the very start of Le Mans ’66, I knew this was going to be a movie that this was going to be one of the movies that would be ranking highly on my Top Films of 2019 list.
The casting for the movie is perfect, Christan Bale is brilliant as Ken Miles with his love for engines and racing, plus the love for his family, he may come across as arrogant at first, but blimey I really started to love the way that Bale portrayed Miles throughout the movie.
The same can be said for Matt Damon in his role ascar designer Caroll Shelby, I mean who hasn’t heard of Shelby, one of the worlds most famous names in the amazing looking and sounding cars.
I wasn’t fully aware of the story of Miles, Shelby, Ford and Ferrari, it was something I knew a little about, so Le Mans ’66 intrigued me and especially knowing that the film is based on a true story pulled me even more.
Don’t be mislead thinking that this is a film just about racing cars, it’s by no means that, Le Mans 66 is a story of the passion that two men have for racing and winning, the battle of the two big companies Ford and Ferrari, the backstabbing and ruthlessness that big companies go through to win by any means, it’s a fantastic story that is full of those peddle to the floor moments and applying the breaks to bring you home and down to Earth.
Add to the mix the superb direction of James Mangold, some amazing cinematography from Phedon Papamichael and a soundtrack by Marco Beltrami and Buck Sanders that I really want in my collection now, Le Mans 66 is an amazing film and one that I really want to see again.
I recommend you see Le Mans ’66 on the big screen when it races into UK Cinemas on 15th November, it looks and sounds great. My hat is tipped to Cineworld for an amazing choice for the first Public Cineworld Secret Screening, I can’t wait now to see what they are bringing us, Cineworld Unlimited Cardholders, next.
